I am looking for software that will let me record real instruments as well as hook up a midi controller and get some piano/strings/other close to real sounding instruments. I am looking in the sub-$300 price range, but would consider higher priced software if I really like it.

So far, I have only tried two types of software. I had garageband on my old mac and liked it pretty well. Then for my current PC, I downloaded the n-track demo and found it somewhat confusing and busy.

For the Midi controller, I would like good build quality and somewhere around 49 keys.

As of now i have a pc, microphones, an art tps II preamp, a m-audio delta 66, and krk rokit rp6 monitors.

What suggestions do you have for me?
Thank you

Reaper & M-Audio.

M-Audio makes reliable & affordable MIDI keyboards. I have their 88-key one but they also have smaller ones.

You can try Reaper as long as you like without purchasing, and there are no restrictions. The full version only costs about $40. It rivals the more expensive software out there (Cubase, Sonar, etc.).

thanks i will try reaper tomorrow when i hook up my sound stuff. also with reaper and the m-audio keyboard will i be able to hear what i am playing in real time(i will have it hooked up with usb)? and i have an electronic drum set with left and right TRS outputs, could monitor this in real time?

Yep. Reaper has a button on the track that you click and it will let you hear what you're playing with whatever effects you have on there also.

Depending on your sound card/computer, etc., there may be some latency. But I have an old computer and I hear no latency at all.

If you need any help setting it up or anything let me know. It's real simple.

wow reaper is a nice program thanks for recommending it. i have one last question, there is some static noise coming through on the recordings of my guitar(the only instrument ive used so far), how do eliminate this? does it have to do with what electrical outlet my computer/recording stuff is plugged into?

Hmm...I have no idea. How are you recording it? Miking an amp? Hooking it up direct?

I've gotten static noises just from playing too close to my computer monitor (CRT), so that could be a cause. If it is, try backing up about 5ft. from it.

Maybe someone else who knows more about this can chime in.

I am miking an amp for my recordings. I realized I had the gain up a little bit on my preamp, maybe this was the cause for some of the noise. Today I got the M-Audio Axiom 61 keyboard, how do I get the Reaper software to recognize it? Do I need to install m-audio's software?
