What should I upgrade first?

So here's my current setup...
2 $40 mics (crap sony and crap Radio shack)- one for my vocals, one for acoustic guitar
plugged into a 2-to-1 headphone splitter
plugged into the mic-in on my laptop

I am unhappy with the quality

I want to improve it.

I was thinking about getting on of those USB or Firewire Pre-Amps.
I was also thinking about getting a better mic, but don't know what type to get a condenser or dynamic.

What should I upgrade first? ...and what is your recommendation on what I should upgrade it to. Think Low Budget!

So you'r using crappy mics and plugging them in to the mic in of a crappy sound card, using headphone splitter, no less.

It's obvious to a duck that you need to upgrade both. And you're wondering which to upgrade first?

I'd say just flip a coin or something.

m-audio

I decided to get an m-audio solo Firewire pre-amp...We'll see if that makes a difference...eventually I will upgrade the mic but i don't really have the cash right now...well i guess I do but i'm stingy.

Is such a mic input on a laptop even stereo?

doubt it.

i have no idea dude, it sucks is all i know. but hopefully it wouln't be an issue anymore. I know my mics pretty much blow too...but all in due time. i mean this is purely for a constructive hobby...not like i'm trying to make any money back off of cd sales or something.
