Here's a good question for all of us.
If I had only $300 to spend, should I get a multi fx rack unit for $300 or upgrade my motherboard/processor for $200-$300?

I am working in Sonar with win xp and have a 1.5 ghz processor. My cpu is loaded up and only runs so many tracks with so many plug ins. The solution is to mix what I already have down more into two stereo tracks, yeah I know, but if I could, I'de like to upgrade, so what is the best solution, getting the multi fx rack unit or upgrading the processor to a 2 or 2,2 ghz?

List of Pro's and cons for me.

I could use the rack unit for live shows too, but I like the pre set plug in in sonar and makes it easy for me to mix with instead of having to play areound with a multi fx unit, I'm already familiar with sonar fx.

Let me guess...You have a PIV don't you??

I would imagine the gains of a slightly faster processor would not be as significant as moving the processing to an external box.

weather,, I also read your posts in the Cakewalk forum. I am a computer moron, but something must be horribly wrong with your system if my el-cheapo 566 Celery is kicking your computer's ass. Lot's of folks are doing great, complicated stuff with puter's far slower than yours, so don't upgrade until you figure out what is going on with your setup.

Thanks to some recent advice in my "System Resources, Ctl Alt Delete" thread, my system is really working great now.

Getting the outboard box is of course wise, and it will impress the honies. Since my system is limited, I am using my old Alesis Quadraverb for tracks that need just a little reverb/delay, and saving my plug-ins for crucial stuff. At least with an outboard box, you never have to worry about CPU hogs. What plug-ins are you using?

thanx force of nature

I'm using reverb, ex and chorus plug ins. You're right, I need to find out what's up with my cpu or those troublesome aardvark drivers. I don't want to delete any programs running in Ctrl/alt/delete when they have a box coming up warning me not to delete that particular program or setting might get or programs might get screwed up.
I think I'm a gonna look for an outboard fx processor till these cpu or driver problems are fixed. I can get by for now
