I need to record a bass using the presonus firestudio tube interface. People at GC have been telling me to buy an effects pedal and connect that to the interface. Is that a good way to go? or some sort of di box? maybe some other sort of bass pre-amp that will sound ok.

Thanks for your input.

NOTHING (at least to start). There are two instrument level inputs on that unit. I had the older firepod and recorded my p and j basses direct into it with no problem. I wouldn't buy anything until you confirm that can't get what you want from the unit itself.

I'm using a BBE Bmax (the cheaper solid state one) that I actually like more than the sansamp bass driver DI pedal. Having parametric mids from 250hz to 1K is really nice (and the sonic max is true bypass so you don't have to use it). There are some that actually like the behringer clone, but I have never used it. I have also used (although very little) the Tech 21 RBI and that was also really nice.

If you can spring for one, even if it's a pedal snag a compressor if you can. I think hardware does a better job than software in the case of bass (just personal preference).

Of course this is just what I like though. I do not care for going direct through the sound card and using plugins to shape the sound, I know many do but I have never liked the way that has come out sounding (even using IK's ampeg amp sim).

EDIT: I have a Fender American standard Jazz bass.

I heard some good things about using the DBX 163x specifically for Bass DI. I actually have one, but never use it. lol. I just DI straight into a mic pre and use some UAD plugs for compression.

I never got fantastic results going direct into the interface, although it certainly did an adequate job. I got a better results using a Samsamp Bass DI pedal (or insert your product here) that seemed to make the sound more natural and offered tonnes of tone shaping options. Hope this helps.

thanks guys for the input. I will try recording directly into a channel then look into your suggestions. Greatly appreciate it!

I prefer this EDEN preamp/DI overthe Sansamp, but it is just my personal taste. $120.

I know everybody hates Behringer, but their BDI21 pedal, basically a clone of the Samsamp, is a helluva bang for the buck. Less than 40 bucks and it gives you a whole lot of tone options.

Check it out.

Seriously.

Two thumbs up for the price.
