yeah what really works to clean up those old records (converted to cd ofcourse) -you know get rid of all those clicks and pops

i think a lot of the 2 track editors have some kind of noise reduction type of plug-in that can do that ...
Anything will add artifacts to the signal, though. It also depends on the source material, imho.
I used Algorithmix Sound Laundry ( http://www.algorithmix.com/ )
to clean up some old reel to reel and shellac records (mostly just speech) and I think it worked pretty well. The source material was in really bad shape though, so I didn't really expect miracles.
Not sure if it would work for you or not ... but they have a demo that you can try out.
Good Luck.

There is a tutorial at Syntrillium's website for dubbing LPs. I use the Cool Edit Pro noise reduction and click and pop eliminator programs. If you have noisy records, expect to make several passes. You might also check out directxfiles.com for downloadable noise reduction software. Of course, a mixer is valuable since many receivers that have phone preamps don't have gain adjustment on the preamp or tape outs.
