what purpose do condenser mics serve

I have only owned dynamic microphones so far, SM57 namely, of course. and, i as i further my knowledge about recording... i want to know:

what purpose do condenser microphones serve? i can't find this answer anywhere. all i know is that they are microphones that require phantom power. thats it.

any insight is appreciated
