I am getting another computer to do just hard disk recording. outfitted with several gadget labs 8 ch I/O converers what program would be good for hd recording i am using an external console to mix. I also am wondering if there can be a couple lines of stereo plugin effects returns that can go back to the analog console to do more "production" effects

I have had very good results with Cubase VST/24. It offers 96 channels of digital 24 bit audio (up to 96 kHz sampling rate), unlimited tracks, great midi functions, tons of internal effects prosessing through direct X (shudder), and VST(kick ass) plugins. I enjoy working with Cubase even more than the fabled Protools. Cubase totally kills Cakewalk, hands down. The list price for Cubase VST/24 is around $800, but I shoped around and found it for $539 at http://www.bayviewproaudio.com you can also get standard Cubase VST (48 audio channels and no music score printing function-so what) for quite a bit less. Cubase also has great audio mastering functions, and you can punch in and out just like a "real" studio (whatever real studio means).
Best program on the market :)
sorry to those of you who are fans of cakewalk and logic

I believe that Gadgetlabs is shipping n-Track with their hardware. A lot of us around here use n-Track because it's the most affordable multitracking environment available...and it has 90% of the great features you'll find in the expensive stuff.

If I were you I'd try n-Track for a while until you get a good feel for this stuff, then you can decide what you want to fork over $500 for.
