ok need a new laptop for the mobile rig and since amd and intel changed the processor markups a while ago i'm not really sure what to choose clealry i would be maxing it out in the RAM department and a heady rpm'd ext HDD for recording and streaming. I'll be using this system for performing (keyboard controller & eventually a digital drum kit) and studio work using the following software which will be run through a firepod

nuendo 3
reason 3.0
- reason drum kits 2
- reason pianos
Soundforge 8.0
Waves plugins (diamond edition)
Soundfonts, avg size 200mb

anyone got any suggestions on the what processor and speed we would be looking at and if some all knowing sage on here could explain this new fangled processor markup it would be appreciated.

We live in an age of power. Having enough power is often not as important as having the right setup. Right now my main laptop is a Centrino 1.5 GHz with 1.25 gigs of RAM and an E-mu 1616M feeding Sonar 5 Producer. Doesn't choke up when I'm recording 14 channels at a time (don't have an SPDIF out preamp for those final ins), and it doesn't choke up when I have 2 different orchestral libraries running, MOTU Symphonic Instrument (which is your standard RAM hog) and Synful Orchestra (which is sort of an additive synth type of processor hog).

Centrino 1.5 is definitely the technology of 2+ years ago and doing a pretty good job of keeping up with today's recording software. A core duo will mean you're set for a while...

Actually a core duo could cause problems for hardware drivers and software that don't play nice with multiple processors.

from what i know of the duo processors it's definatley not multiple processors but a dual execution core giving the ability to transfer to and from itself simultaneously basically hyperthreading with another chip i can only assume

My Gateway laptop has 1Gb of RAM and an Athlon-64 Mobile 4000+ processor. It handles Cubase/Reason/Sonar just fine.

It isn't anything like hyperthreading. It is two independent cores just like a dual processor machine. The only major difference is a bunch of latency improvements from having the cores so close together and so close to the cache and stuff.

As for me, I'd favor the Core 2 Duo. That way you're not stuck with a 32-bit-only CPU. In the long run, 64-bit chips are the way things are going, and the Core 2 family seems like as reasonable a point as any to make the move, IMHO.

(I sit here on a G3 iBook waiting with bated breath for Apple to ship Core 2 in a laptop. Basically, I said two years ago that the next laptop I buy would be 64-bit no matter what. I intend to stick to that.)

I'm using a centrino 2Ghz and have had no problems doing projects with 20+ tracks, running some soft synths and FX as well.
