There's a lot of choices.
I've got an M-Audio DMP-3 and I like it.
Good things are being said about the just released VTB-1, and the soon to be released FMR RNP.
If I were you I'd get a 64 channel SSL board. I think that will fill your requirements quite nicely.

Are there better combinations for mic pre's and soundcards (just while we're on the subject)? Are most any mic pre's compatable with most any soundcards?

Choice of mic pre is rarely a compatibility issue, and is always a sound issue. Matching a preamp to a soundcard isn't really very common, and perhaps not very useful. It's more important to get a preamp that works with your microphones to capture the desired sound. In other words, it's all subjective!

u want some nice pre amps how about the NEVE 1073
or the Vintech, or a Manley...sure they run about $2000+ each but no one can say u don't have high end gear

There are a good number of posts starting to show up in the rack and mic forums about the VTB-1. The reviews are very favourable, even against those 2,000$ preamps mentioned above...now I am not saying they are as good, but they are favourable. Anyway, you might want to check it out.
