If you are after loud...well...a limiter is simple enough to use and will definately make things louder without going over a set db level. But, you will lose any dynamics in the recording.
Using a compressor with auto-gain will also give you a similiar effect...if not the same effect.
Duplicating a track (like a bass track) can sometimes beef up the bassline....duplicating the guitar track and panning left and right can help widen the sound...
These are all things you can do...but the biggest problem new users have I think (and I'm one of them) is proper eq-ing of the instruments. But....regardless....if your just after loud...some of the things mentioned above will give you a quick result....not necessarily good (*laughing*)....but quick.
