In what order should be signal chain be to get the best bass guitar sound into my mixer [1] (which accepts both XLR and TS). Sometimes we will go straight in using a DI [2] but other times using a multi-effects pedal [3] or a bass compressor [4].

Should it be:

Bass > pedal > DI > mixer

Bass > DI > pedal > mixer

Bass > DI > mixer > pedal (insert)

???

Skipping the DI results a quite a bit of electrical noise.

[1] Yamaha MG10/2 analogue mixer
[2] Behringer GI100 DI
[3] Zoom 505 guitar pedal
[4] Soundtank Bass Comp BP5

Bass>DI>Effects>Mixer...I know this because a bassist friend of mine came by the other day to do some recording in my project studio and that's how he had his stuff set up.

With something like a Zoom, it goes before the DI as it functions at instrument level, not mic or line level.

Gotta agree with Light on this one. If it's a pedal it should definately go before the DI.

If it's a rack FX unit you may not need the DI at all and can go straight from the FX outs to the line inputs on the mixer.

And usually put the compressor first in the chain but sometimes it works best on the end. Just play around and see what sounds best.
