What notebook processor do you reccommend? Centrino, P4, Athlon 64, Athlon XP even?

Hello! I am about to purchase a laptop soon and I'm torn... I don't know what to get. This will be my main machine, gaming and all, but I figure (with the exception of video) if it can do recording, it can do any of the other things I'll need it to do. :) Anyways, my budget is $2000 MAX and I will have the money next week (took out a student loan ;) ).

I am primarily looking at Dell 9100's for P4 and 8600's for Centrino, which, although are around the same price for what I want/need, the P4 is heavier and the battery won't last as long, but is much more powerful. Also in consideration is the less expensive Compaq with a Athlon 64 in it. I know the difference between 32-bit, 64-bit, etc. and that I will only be running 32-bit apps (unless I get a little crazy with Linux ;), but would this give me any advantage?

Which do you guys think would be the best for recording? I'm kind of leaning towards the 9100 with a P4, but if the A-64 will do as well or close, I'd rather get it because I can get it and a new DVD burner plus pay off some on my new Hughes and Kettner Triamp... lol. All opinions are appreciated!

Wow... I must agree... that laptop looks VERY good. Those are quite hefty features for the price! :) The only thing I would want extra is an extended warranty, but we'll see. I'll definitely continue to check them out. I've personally had bad experience with eMachines, but rumor is they're under new management... so I don't know. I'll check it out. Thanks! Anyone else?

The new A64 eMachine book frickin' rocks. 80gig HD, 15.4" LCD, 512MB ram, and a DVD-R. For $1600??? Damn that's cheap. If I needed a new book right now I'd get it.

Agreed! :D I may go with the compaq A-64 because I want a warranty, too. Or I can get a Dell 9100. I'm torn!

So get an extended warranty from eMachines. No big deal.

Hey man! That's what it looks like it's going to be. I was going to get the Compaq, and then I realized how bad the video card was... A Geforce 440??? No thank you. I do plan on gaming with this machine. I'm probably going to call Best Buy soon and get some info about buying it there. If nothing else, I'll go direct. Thanks for pointing those out! You definitely cannot beat that deal!
