I came accross a few vintage photos taken inside several different studios during the 70s - 80's, and it looks like the musicians were wearing AKG headphones, But I couldn't remember what model they were. . .

So, does anyone recall what model AKG headphones were so commonly used in the studio for tracking vocals during the majority of the 80's. . . Were they the 240 Monitors or the 270's . .???

Unfortunately, most of my memories from that era is clogged with malted hops and bong resin. :p

My headphones of choice back then was the AKG K240DF(diffused field) referred by others as "dead flat". Indeed they did the trick and I liked the honest output they had. I got a bonus when I was rumaging through boxes I hadn't gone through in the 2 years since we moved into our new house. They had been packed since we moved from California back in 1993 and had some remenants of my other studio, like a gooseneck and some electrical cables. Low and behold there was a slightly used pair of the 240DF's, which I had 3 pairs of. For some reason this one survived. They are not the most efficient cans out there (high impedance) but they sure sound good. I bought a pair of the newer K240's which now are low impedance and much easier to drive. also my favorites overall. I do however use the Sennheiser Pro280's to evaluate the low end of a mix as they are very tight and efficient in that region. The 240's are much better for my ears for voice tracking. Problem is the leakage as they are not a terribly well sealed setup. The Sennheiser's are, and while I do my vocal tracking with them, they are not my fav's for that purpose. Oh well.......I certainly can see why the 240's are a popular can. Real easy to wear for hours on end and comfy........
