Howdy all,

I am a newbie so please direct me if there is a better list to post this to.

I would like to do live recordings of a folk group that I play in. My choice for doing that would be a minidisc recorder and then accomplish editing at home on my computer. The MD unit that attracts me is an old one, a Sony MDM-X4. It seems to have four channels-in and would be great to record a small group, I think.

Problem is that this unit is no longer sold. Is there a cost effective substitute that includes a mixer and recorder like the Sony? Is this even a good idea?

If anyone has a good used MDM-X4 for sale I might be interested.

Can't help ya with the MiniDisk but Here are some other portable options.
Pay close attention to the ones that offer the ability to export individual wave files, so you can mix and edit with your computer.

The minidisc is inferior to the hard drive recorders, due to data compression and sometimes expensive media. Hard drive devices offer interaction with your computer (you can only access the audio files in a minidisc through its analog I/O) and much better resolution. I seriously considered a Yamaha 8-track md at one time, but I think by now I would have outgrown it. I'd follow crankz1's advice and go with a standalone hard drive recorder (actually, I'd go with the setup I have, which is a PC DAW with a digital mixer, sound card and other bells & whistles, but that's another story).
