Heyy i was wondering what kind of microphone we schould use to record the vocals in our band.
Because we are a metal band our Vocals ar mostly screamed or shouted. I was wondering if a mic with a big membrane can break if it is to loud?

As already suggested a SM58 will work just fine.
But if you have money to burn go with the SM7b or a large diaphragm condenser your screaming/yelling vocals won't hurt it at all.
For a LDC the new MXL2003a is a great value at $170. from B&H you get a whole hard shell case and they throw in all of the bells and whistles and a free SDC microphone that can be used on the drums or where ever. ;)

Microphones will survive jet engine levels... you ain't gonna break it....

There is no guide for 'this is the microphone for you to use'.

Every singer needs to audition a range of mics to find out what works best for them
(even the major studios do this for their big clients)

Bono suppossedly still demands an SM58 so you dont have to pine for a $4k mic.
Shop around, try some out.

+1 on the SM7b. Ideal for aggression (and if you use that for the name of your first album, I want a point). :D

They do all of the time!
He just seems to mysteriously get his voice down through that damn cable somehow.

Well, he's got a back-up male XLR jack instead of a belly button. I thought that was common knowledge! :D

John,

Mics are weird on vocals because it totally depends on the match between the singer and the mic. I have one mic that sounds awesome on one lady and terrible on my wife, and both are great singers. Lots of pros have used SM58s in the studio. For metal, I would think the ubiquitous SM58 would work just fine.

My 2 cents.

John_hancock,

Two empty cans with a string between them. ;)

Seriously, I would go with a dynamic microphone like Shure SM58 which can handle loud sound levels and/or dynamic microphones from other manufacturers able to do the same.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

+1 on the Shure sm7b... you see it all over in metal. Handles screaming really well
