OK, there's a foot of snow on the ground and I'm bored. Just wondering what recording magazines people find helpful. I have found that Home Recording Magazine, while being kind of thin, has good articles. Electronic Musician seems to just review esoteric equipment that I will never use.

I subscribe to Mix, EQ, and Recording...... I occasionally read Sound On Sound and I've thumbed thru Home Recording at Chapters........

For recording, I've found EQ to be the overall best mag. At times, Recording and Home Recording mags have some good articles, but EQ is my favorite for consistently relevant articles about the project studio.

I'm also a keyboard player, mainly, so Keyboard Magazine is also a priceless resource to finding out what's going in the keyboard world.

I think it's always a good idea to have a "recording-type" magazine and a mag devoted to your main instrument(s).

I too read Recording. Currently, it is the only mag I have read with reference to recording, and realy look forward to it coming each month. I also read Sound and Vision to try and stay on top of A/V technology.

I just want to say thanks for starting this thread because I have wanted to start getting something else. I was getting Guitar Player but decided to stop it since most of the stuff in there is way above my head as well as me being an acoustic man. I think I am going to check out that EQ mag that Rev and Bruce mentioned. I also think I will check out some of the acoustic guitar mags. I have kind of glanced at them before, but it seemed that they might be geared towards country. I could be wrong, but will know when I get one.

There was a very cool mag from England that I saw from time to time called Studio Sound - it was WAY expensive, but very good. I haven't seen it around here (Southern Ontario, North America!) for a couple of years now...

I subscribe to EQ, Recording,Home Recording,Electronic
Musician,Guitar World,Mac World, Vintage Guitar and
Guitar One. I am dumping Guitar World and Guitar One.
If I see another article on Korn or Creed I will puke.
Also am dumping Electronic Musician for lack of articles
that pertain to anything I am interested in. Lately I
find EQ the most interesting and useful. I read Mix
occasionally but it is slanted more toward pros.
Rock On!

I got Future Music for a while. British mag; came with a CD in each issue and was sort of pricey but I think they went belly-up....
NAMM was cool for mag comparisons in that they gave away a free issue of EVERY mag out there to attendees. All day long every day of the show they had a crew of guys wheeling cases of them over to the grab 'em for free area.

Where can I subscribe to that Home Recording mag? Never seen it in stores.

Sound on Sound is always pretty good, But if you are in australia, Check out "Audio Technology".

Since I'm a keyboard player, I get Keyboard Magazine. That's it.(BTW, I have a collection of all of them except for about eight or ten). I used to subscribe to Electronic Musician a few years ago, but I cancelled it when there were too many useless articles. For example, they might have an article on how to do a great mix. But then it would just contain advice like "get a good night sleep before the mixing session" or "give your ears a rest every couple of hours". Furthermore, their product reviews were too wimpy compared to Keyboard. They were never as critical.

I like Recording and Tape Op.

Holy shit, with the exception of Track Rat here, how could there be so little mention of Tape Op? It craps all over every other recording mag going (OK, I get a "slick" fix from Mix), has absolutely the most informative interviews with people who really matter in the world of recording, has great "how-to" articles, gear reviews, and is the most encouraging and inspiring rag on the planet for those who are trying to get something to sound good coming out of our speakers...

Uh, and it's free...

100% with you here. TapeOp kicks some serious ass. Where else are you gonna find interviews with Tchad Blake, Dave Fridmann, Bob Weston and Jim O'Rourke??? Great stuff.

Now I Know Why This Is Called HomeRecording.com!!!!

The two best magazines-without question for computer based music production are Future Music and Computer Music. Both magazines are run by the same company in Europe. Unlike the US based magazines they provided very useful info, and a ton of useful stuff on the cd's that are issued with every issue. As Magazines go they are more expensive, however, when you look at what you get in comparisson to the other Magazines available, just in terms of samples and software, it is worth every penny. You can subscribe or check them out at http://www.futuremusic.co.uk and http://www.computermusic.co.uk respectively.

Hidy Ho!

i suscribe to electronic musician and home recording. i'm going to dump electronic musician and maybe pick up eq.
