what laptop to buy

I wonder if you can help me with deciding on a relatively affordable laptop that I could use for home recording and songwriting. Nothing professional, just something that I can record bass with thru a lexicon alpha interface.

dont buy a laptop. hard/expensive to upgrade, parts are sacrificed for the purpose of mobility. if you end up buying a laptop, get a multiple processor unit to avoid heat damage due to running a high demand recording program. core 2 duo macs/pc's are running good, yet you will pay no less than 1200-1500 for one that will suffice.

I tend to agree. If you want a laptop, though, my advice is to wait a couple of weeks for any new model quirks to be worked out and then go with the new MacBook Pro. The LED backlighting should have significantly better color accuracy than the fluorescent tubes in previous models because it's a continuous spectrum (well... probably three or four overlapping continuous spectra) as opposed to a handful of discrete spectral spikes.

(Yes, I know other manufacturers are doing the LED backlight thing, too, but this is the only specific model I know about off the top of my head. :D)
 
if you are looking for portability that doesnt have to fit in you're suitcase, you could even go with an imac. you'll get the same power for 2/3 the price instead of a macbook. and its an all in one, so you just pick it up and go. i just got my imac in two days ago and its great unless you have pro tools :)
 
"affordable", "cheap" and "laptop" should never be used in the same sentence....

Cheap laptops are made for Internet browsing, email and spreadsheets.
