What kind of synth?

Here's what I don't need in a synthesizer...traditional instruments like brass, percussion, strings, guitar, piano, etc.

What I do need in a synthesizer...smooth pad-style sounds, and features that will allow me to create many variations and textures with these pad and electric sounds.

I bought an RS-5 which has only a small amount of the ambient/pad sounds I need. Too much of the synth is dedicated to the 'traditional' instruments.

So what kind of synth will give me what I want?
 
I recently bought a Roland Juno 60 and i have found it perfect for ambient pad sounds. i'm a huge fan of Brian Eno and of warm pad sounds and so did some research. Also being new to analog synthesis, i found it very helpful in learning the basics.
 
You need a real synth. The Roland RS-5 is based on sample-playback. That's where the 'real' instruments come from. Check out the new analog modeling synths. (Access Virus, Clavia Nord Lead, Nord Modular, Roland JP8000, JP8080, Korg MS2000,....)
Or older analogs etc...

You really need a synth that allows you to create your own sounds, and doesn't start from samples...
 
The older Korg M1 and Wavestation, Roland D50 are AWESOME for rich pad sounds. You can get them all pretty cheap if you can find them. They were all used on a lot of the 80's modern rock stuff and a lot of newer techno and ambient.
 
sounds like you wanna create electronica, so you'll need several parts.. lemme see...
GRRR.. i had made this long comparison between the different synth modules out there, right here in this forum and i can't find it...

aight.. go check out Waldorf Q/MicroQ, Nord MicroModular, Novation Nova/supernova, Access Virus...
mess around with their modulation matrixes and see what you like..
