Sorry, this is yet another "How do I get this sound?" threads. I love the snare tone the drummer of a fast punk band called Cigar uses. To hear the tone I'm talking about, check this link and download Mr. Hurtado:

It's very tight sounding and I'm wondering what kind of snare this is and how that sound is obtained. Could it be a piccolo snare? What kind of wood is it? Thanks for your time fellow drummers.

I can't put my finger on make or model but it sounds like it's a plain jane 5x14 size steel or wood snare, dampened, close mic'd, lightly compressed(maybe), VERY dry and hot in the mix. Then snare had to sound great before it was recorded to get this sound. Also, the player has alot to do with the sound as well. He plays alot of finesse-y herky jerky stuff on it so it had to be recorded in such a way as to accentuate all those nuances. You're not going to get the same energy sound on the snare from a drummer that just hits 2 and 4.

Why don't you E-mail their drummer, and ask him to tell you what kind of kit he played in the studio. It's a great drum sound.

Actually -I've never heard them before, but I like them. I like a lot of these types of punk bands. Sort of somewhere between PennyWise and Offspring to me. Great vocals and a tight band.

He's not hitting the snare very hard, in fact it sounds like he's barely hitting it.

It's a wooden snare, probably an 8"x14" because it's pitched fairly deep.
It reminds me of an old Ludwig Coliseum snare that I had.

It's funny you should say that, Tim. This was from Cigar's first album and was either produced or actually engineered by Fletcher from Pennywise. That explains a lot when it comes to their sound, both their songs and sonically. Thanks for the replies guys; very helpful.

If anyone out there besides me is still interested in this, go to www.cigartheband.com and watch the movie featuring Bomer from a band called RKL. He's using a clear drum head and it sounds very similar to the Cigar snare (I think).

Thanks for the props or recognition.
When we recorded this album in '98 i used my thick maple shell snare that i bought yrs ago in a used music store. only brand name is the pearl hardware. it's deep about 8" and it's a standard 14" rim. the maple shell is about 1" thick. also i crank the hell out of the lugs. gotta be super tight! The engineer was not into it but i insisted on using it. i love the snare live especially and not just for the sake of ego, but because i felt it was never captured on that recording... i was hitting the drums as hard as i possible could. i always have and have had to work on volume control because that's all i had ever done. the kit is a ludwig classic with the ole 22" bass drum. it's a simple kit with a single pedal.
the hi-hat was bleeding too much into the mics so the mix was heavily gated. this cut the bleed down but compromised the overall drum sound. i really wanted to capture the intensity but felt that it was lost with the gates. which is also why you might of said the snare was barely hit. there is a clip on you tube of the snare if interested. search cigar warped '99 2 kevins
i would link it but i can't from here. ok fellas, thanks for noticing.
