That's a bit like saying and asking "It's so hard getting clean these days. What's the best shower out there nowadays".
That is a question with answers so wide and deep and by necesity opinionated.

The only real way to answer that is to demo them at a store, or order some with a good return policy. A monitor to one person may sound terrible to another, especially in a different mixing environment. Every monitor has its "special feature" or "unique characteristic" either sonically or through its design, some of these characteristics or features may only really sound good in the advertisement and not in person. Everyone is different and everyone will suggest what they or a friend or colleague will use, its such a subjective decision and there is no real right or wrong answer. I suggest to pick a budget, see what other people are using and why, then demo those monitors yourself so you can answer your own question.

To answer the question in the post heading and disregarding the unanswerable stuff,...

At my studio I used Mackie HR824's for years. Then I switched to the KRK VXT8's, which sounded similar but bigger. Then I got rid of them and got some Yamaha HS80M's and I love them. They're really affordable, and I'm finding my mixes are coming out better on these than other monitors I've used. I also have the HS50M's in my home studio and they sound great, too.

You don't need monitors that cost a million dollars to do good mixes. All you need is one, decent pair that work for you and that you STICK WITH for a long time. The longer time goes on, the more you get to know them and they become an integral part of your workflow. The HS80's are really, dare I say, cheap, and they sound great to me. I've never been happier.

Cheers :)

Yep, if anything, you need to work with your budget (extend that as far as possible), and 'learn' how they translate to other audio systems. You can do it with crappier speakers, but it will take more time to figure out what they are telling you. IMO, the less money you spend on monitor speakers, the more money you should be spending on room treatment.

The problem here tho, lies in the fact that a small room requires likely more room treatment $$ than upper low end monitors cost. They call that 'stuck between a rock and a ....something.. what is it? almost as hard as rocks? Huh?

:D

It's much better to have speakers that cost $200 each in a well treated room, than speakers that cost $5,000 each in an untreated room. The former will be much more accurate, which is what the OP is asking about.

I really have nothing else to say that no one else has covered. One thing I guess I should add is that you won't need a subwoofer if you ever decide you might want one.
