I watched this clip about William Shatner doing voice overs for a new animated film.
It looks like he was recording it from home. Anyway, I noticed right at the end of the clip this shot. What is that (red arrow pointing to it)? Is that another mic so he can hear himself in the mix?

Thanks.

That is a pop filter. Keeps the puffs of air from hitting the diaphragm when you say P's and B's. Otherwise known as Plosives.

I made mine out of coat hangar and old pair of stocking from the wifey. :)

Oh crap. I see it now. Duh. Its almost hidden with the black background. I was thinking when I was looking at, saying wow, he doesn't have a pop filter, I guess its too far away to worry about?

thanks chili.

That it is ... but the distance from the microphone in that picture I don't think that he had to worry to much about Plosions.

I had a feeling you knew what it was and just didn't see it. Eh, but it gave me a chance to talk about my wife and her stockings... :laughings:

Right, it is there more to stroke his ego than to remove plosives.

Does she have any old stockings left? There could be a market for this sort of thing!

:laughings: You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to diggy_dude again. :thumbs up:

Too funny.

I'm always interested in how pros do stuff. I guess when you are 80 years old and don't need the money, you pick a chair over driving to the studio and standing in a booth. :D

I noticed the shag carpet behind the script on the stand. Assuming that is to deaden the sound.

Baffles in the background. It still looks like his house and not a studio.

Yes, indeed. I'll run down to the store and pick up a few packs for $10 and sell them to you for oh, $100. I'll even print a certificate of authenticity!!! :)

and you do paypal, right?

In that situation, it's being used as a "stay at this distance" filter.

I was recording my friend singing last week and because we get a good signal, I usually have her 3~4 feet from the mic. In any event the mic is often above her and angled down. But I was thinking that my homemade pop shield wasn't necessary, given the distance from the mic she was.
