I'm thinking about buying a 788 but what is all this stuff on about mp3's? I read through that big topic but I'm still cluelesss to whats going on??

The sharing of music between 788 users became sort of a significant part of the TASCAM.com community. Personally, I posted only 1 link to one of my songs in 6 months, but I recieved close to 50 responses to the song. The responses included things like: how I could mix better, how I could get more out of the machine, how I could pan differently, how I could voice my instruments differently-- more effectivley...and, how I could utilize the specific functions of the 788 better...essentially, how I could make the TASCAM 788 Portastudio a better machine for ME. Others reciveved the same input. Others contributed, as well, to helping others. Everyone contributed, in the end, EXCEPT TASCAM moderator Pat Kilianey. He decided it was too much work for him. He decided that what was most important was that HIS job be made a little easier.

It upset several users, the whole thing having been sparked by someone posting a link to a very offensive song. (WITH s disclaimer that it was offensive).

Here's the deal: once you buy the 788 and a disc burner (needed) you're into it about $1300 or $1400. Guitar Center will sell you a Yamaha 16 track for about $400 more ($1800).

Do the math.

But, if you decide to get the 788 we are here in the pergatory of 788 to help you. For all creative purposes, TASCAM has abandoned their clients....but we are still here...

Still not seeing the problems here?? I've been lurking over at the tascam forums and there seems to be lots of help and sharing going on over there.

Tascam's forum is helpfull and sharing, to a point, but they decide through editing and deletion what they want on their forum. After awhile you simply get tired of jumping through their hoops trying to help someone out.

For example, if someone needs help mixing, or help with general recording techniques and you reply: "hey, there's a site called homerecording.com....there are lots of useful posts there!" It will get deleted. You cannot say that on the TASCAM forum.

You cannot even elude to an mp3 site, or to E-Bay, say, if someone needs a piece of equipment and cannot find one, you cannot refer them to ANYTHING. If you do, you will be deleted, you will be warned.

There is help happening at TASCAM.com, from other members. PKillianey simply refers people to old posts.

It wasn't always so.

So is it worth getting? I've been listening to some songs from the mp3 site that people recorded with there 788 and it sounds really good. How much are the cdr's for this thang? Do I even need a cdr?

Cool, I'm glad I didn't sway you away from the 788-- although it may have sounded like I was trying to-- NOT SO!! It's a great machine.

If it's in your price range, yes, I think you'll find there's nothing better. The machine comes with an 8gig hard drive. I don't know if you know what that means (I didn't when I bought mine)...if not, that means you can fill up that space without needing a crd. I had my 788 for four months without getting a cdr, BUT, I had to delete a lot of stuff as I went along. This didn't bother me because most of it wasn't worth keeping. I'd take a guess that you could record around 25 five minue songs at 8 tracks each without running out of memory. Someone else chime in if they have a different take on 8 gigs. Then, if you don't want to spend the money right now on the cdr, you can get one for around $250-$300 when you need to.

Also, you'll probably want one to burn your own audio cd's of your songs. (the cdr's also back-up data so you can delete it off your hard drive and free up memory).

When you buy, make sure you have the latest operating software already installed (v1.10 I think)...otherwise you will start running into problems backing up data and what-not.

If you can, I would recommend getting the cdr right off, and back up your data often. Otherwise, if your 788 crashes and you lose your hard drive (this happened to me) you lose all the work you've done.

Hope this helps.

BigPapaFly thanks for all the answers, I just have so many questions.

Can I export files to my pc? Either from the hard drive or from a line out, rca or something?

The 788 pulls data from the hard drive in 4 gig partitions, so, if your 788 came with a hard drive like mine it would have 2 partitions. But you can put a 20 gig one in there and get 4 partitions out it.

And yes you can export a stereo mix to your pc via the spdif (digital) output at a 24 bit rate and then edit and master on high quality software that stand alone recorders can't touch. There are ways to get individual tracks out that way but it ain't easy, so if you're going to back up and save all the data of a song it's best to get their burner.

I wish the 788 had a digital stereo input.

Philboyd...I really didn't know I could get 20 gig in this machine. ????????? How? Where? $$$$? It took me just shy of four hours to back up a song a couple weeks ago. That means 4 hours to re-load it. It was only 3 gig. I need more memory!

Yo I was wondering if you could do this with the 788? Does it have some rca hook ups? If so could I hook the 788 up to the inline of my pc sound card, then record to my pc using soundforge? That way it would be recorded as a wav file? Can this be done with the 788? Anyone done it? Sound good? Lose any quality that way?

bpf,

Yeah it's just a regular old hard drive in it, I think they're called IDE. Anyway, you can get 16 gig in 4 partitions out of a 20 gig drive (4 partitions max).

jiffy999,

Yes you can go through the stereo out's rca's to your sound card, the spdif (digital) output is better though because the signal stays digital so there's no loss in quality. Your computer may not have a digital input but the hardware is cheap (try computergeeks.com) and easy to install.

Philboyd, my recently-departed-from-the-TASCAM-BBS-fellow-dobro-playing friend! And BPF...howzit going guys?

Before I got my 788 there was a Yahoo-group on the 788, but it was terribly inactive, and it closed down and whoever was left went to the Tascam board.

Now, I think the Tascam board is a great resource, but I knew it was only a matter of time before censorship clicked in.

I haven't had any problems that I would worry about censorship as far as the machine itself goes, but apparently some have...and if they get too vocal, the OFF switch may be used.

As far as the MP3s and links go, I don't really get it. I see in the Roland Users Group magazine where they list users' URLs all the time...and they have no control over the content. I suspect it's just paranoia on TASCAM's part in the event a PO'd user starts up a big rant on his own page.

It's certainly to their advantage to have the links to users' music available to other users and prospective purchasers. The machine is quite capable...just not in my hands!

I'll look around here, but I think I'm glad I found this place!

Oh, and BPF, I think you can only address 4 x 4gig partitions, so anything larger than a 16 gig drive is wasted...of course I don't even know if you can buy an IDE drive that small anymore...

aa4ga

Yeah, it's a shame to see people keep asking where they can find mp3's done on the 788 and not be able to help them. Pretzel logic.

Got any you want to share?

I'm at mp3.com, just type in John Malcolm Penn to the search engine and go to the page. I'll be changing the songs soon.

No, not yet...but I'm trying to find the time to work on some stuff...I'll have to figure out someplace to put it, I'm not sure about mp3.com...I'll have to research it when I'm ready to post.

Yeah, I was checking out your stuff...sounded good, except not enough dobro! I liked Little Sadie, but I'm partial to that tune, since it's about me! =:o

CU!

Ok, I'm the oddball, I prefer the 388 to the 788.

I'm a vintage reel/analog fanatic, and I'm just plain spoiled by the 388, which embodies all of Tascam's superior engineering concepts, now vintage engineering concepts.

The 388 is a nice, full featured recording console/reel recorder, all in one, and the 788 is a high techy digital tinker toy. In comparison to the 388, the 788 is puny and underpowered. Anyway, that's MHO.

Tascam 388's may still be found in good condition, used, for low dollar amounts, ~$500, on most days.

I will agree about Tascambbs, and the censorship thing, which really makes no sense, other than following the whims of the present moderators.

Tascambbs used to be a lot better, but now it's gotten lamer, as time has gone on, since the original censorship issue came up.

F/I, the Tascambbs is supposed to be for the 'clinical' answers to 'technical' questions, and they're clamping down on practically everything else, which really makes it very boring.

I used to post there a lot, as 'long time user', and occasionally I still do, but I stopped posting there a lot, because I'd work on technical memos, posts, for maybe hours, and have lots of precise details in them, then, poof, they're gone the next day.

-Not only that, but certain non-Tascam-employee [volunteer] moderators will delete your posts, if you disagree with him factually, even if you're right and the moderator's wrong, poof, your post gets deleted.

I, for one, am sick of Tascambbs. They need guys like us around there, just to liven things up a bit, but they suck, they're stupid, and people like [you &] me are not wanted.

-"No personal crap on Tascambbs, there are plenty of other websites for blatant self promotion of your own music"- so goes the Tascambbs RULES. No references to your websites or to Ebay. No references to prices of gear, used or otherwise. [No contradicting the moderator, even if you're right].

Therefore, promotional posts about my free 4-cd set, THE DAVEMANIA COLLECTION, [which is still currently available], is not wanted on Tascambbs, even though it's doing really fine here on HRcom, and would be good material to post on Tascambbs, whether they realize it or not.

Fact is, Tascambbs just burned me out, by deleting a lot of my technical posts, some of which I worked on at length, and by deleting almost every post I made that 'embellished' over the technicalities in any way, or that directly contradicted the moderator.

I'll still post at Tascambbs occasionally, but fact is, that without me posting brilliant and hilarious stuff over there, that board's gotten just plain boring.

When Tascam posted "THE RULES" memo, it basically said, "Dave, you and your posts aren't welcome here", and the deleting of my posts just put the icing on the cake.

The creative Tascam users are what makes the Tascambbs vital and interesting, but they've just strangled the entire bbs, with those ridiculous "RULES", which are enforced unevenly, at best.

I mean, how many times can you answer the question, "how do I hook my Portastudio to my 'puter"? Tascam- you suck. Your Tascam technology of today is schlocky, as compared to the engineering of 15 years ago, and your Tascambbs sucks.

You heard it here first.

Hey daveMania...you think YOU were brilliant and hillarious, you should have read some of my posts...hehehe...hahhahahahahahahahahahahahahah

I wish I did catch that, but no, now it's all on the 'scrap heap of history',...

or in this case, the bit bucket.

Some of my best work was deleted, and I'm sure so was yours, and other people's too. Once, I saw a quick post by another user that contradicted the moderator, and it wasn't rude or anything, and I went to post a quick response in support of this user, and before I could finish my post and press enter, this other guy's post had been deleted, poof, right before my eyes.

Hey, I don't want to name names, but a certain moderator over at Tascambbs uses the boards to engraciate himself, make himself look good, despite who's right and who's wrong.

More irritating than having your normal posts deleted, practically overnight, is despite THE RULES at Tascambbs, which say no non-technical-non-Tascam-nonsense, [i.e., no DAVEMANIA], if you're a certain moderator, there seems to be plenty of board space to post your trivia. TASCAMBBS! PHOOEY!!

With no Davemania at Tascambbs, [this time around], it leaves a pretty big void there, a huge void, for sure.

DAVEMANIA: The Davemania Collection of Home Recording, 4-cd set: All me/All free, still available, not sold in stores, and offer ends soon, so get yours here today. Request by email at d.archuleta@att.net Thx. /DA
