My organization will host a banquet/concert with about 500 attendees. I need to hire a person who can bring a professional sound system (speakers, amplifiers, mixer, mics, etc) and manages that system while singers perform. I was thinking this is the job of a karaoke DJ, but I don't need to use any of the DJ's music since I will provide a CD of all the songs that will be performed.

Is the person I'm looking for still called a "DJ", or is there another job title that solely deals with this type of task.

the person you are looking would be someone who specializes in sound reinforcement. A dj is not set up for such an engagement. Unless you are talking about one microphone + pre recorded music. If there are multiple micophones and other instruments you will need an audio engineer. Call your local music gear store that handles PA systems and I'm shure they can give you a name of someone who is capable. As far as these things go, If its just tracks and A few vocal mics it would be quite easy for person equipped for bands to do this. + DJ's in general do not have foldback monitors for the performers to hear themselves. A few things to consider are the load in (where he can access the space being used for this event) and power. How many 20 amp circuits are avail or access to a power distro. + will lighting be needed.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply.

yeah, I just want to play back pre-recorded music, 4 to 5 wireless mics, fold back monitors, and speakers; NO instruments at all.

How should I refer to this "person equipped for bands" that you mentioned? Is he the "audio engineer"? I want to know the correct term/title in order to search more efficiently.

look in the phone book for sound reinforcement. Or you can call him audio engineer. You will not find any listings under audio engineer due to the specific nature of the word engineer refering to in the non musical communities as someone who drives a train or (electrical or mechanical engineer) they wont let you put the word engineer in a phone book in reference to audio> ??!!. Any way, start your search among the band community in your area. there is bound to be a few of the larger bands that have people who they use on a regular basis. Unfortunately there are usually few ways to find this reclusive type of person other than the above mentioned. You may also check with event coordinators in your area and see if they have any recomendations.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, you've been very helpful. Thank you very much.
