First off, here are the important specs of my setup:
Computer
HP Pavilion dv1000 (probably not the best choice, but I got a great deal on it, and decided to use it to make music with)
2 gigs of RAM, 1.86 Ghz
Windows XP SP2
Soundcard is called "Conexant High Definition Audio"
Software
Ableton Live 6
Cubase LE (haven't really used it yet, got it with a mixer)
Absynth 4 (used as a VST in Live)
Hardware
M Audio Keystation 88es (soon to be an Axiom 61)
Yamaha MW10 mixer (probably not the best choice)
M Audio MobilePre USB Preamp
I've had most of this stuff for over a year, but I've mostly just been screwing around with MIDI on my keyboard, and that was it. 4 months ago, I got the mixer, since I wanted to start recording guitar, bass, and drums now, but I've just had so much trouble getting my setup to work properly. In retrospect, I should have gone for a firewire interface instead of a USB mixer, but what's done is done.
My biggest problem is that my recorded level in Ableton is too low. When I play through the preamp and listen to it with headphones plugged into the mixer, I can hear everything clearly, but when I record something, the result is usually the recorded output being so low in level, that I have to put a saturator on the track to even be able to hear it at a reasonable volume. I've done everything the mixer's manual told me to, from checking the volume levels and restarting the computer. I use the driver that came with it (Yamaha ASIO DirectKS Driver), and I keep finetuning it, but I still get very noticeable latency between playing the guitar and hearing it.
What I'm asking is what is the best way to set this up to have minimal problems. I've been going crazy for a few months trying to set this up the best I can, but it's never perfect. Hopefully it's not something extremely obvious (like using a different driver; I do have ASIO4All, so if this is better, what is the best way to set this up?) If someone can help me out, even in the smallest way, I would be in your debt forever. Thanks in advance.
