Fishmed. I would look in sonar and see what controllers have maping (or what you want to call it) already set up. I know as far as keyboard controllers Edirol is listed.

I bought a axiom 49 for contolling as I get the keyboard plus sliders & knobs. Setting it up manually with act or other means I found it more of a pain than it was worth. If someone knows something I don't I'd be glad to hear it. As far as I could see I could only control one channel at a time. I'm sure there is a way to tab channels. I just got frustrated. Make sure you know whats possible and whats not before you spend too much.

If there is a way to use a 16 channel controller to controll 16 channels at a time I would love to hear.

I was starting to think the same way about using one that was "pre" defined. The one that looks best for my use would be the Evolution UC-33, but I still need to do some more research.

I should update. I decided to mess around earlier. It looks as it if you are using a midi contoler you can right click on a control in the console view when the control has a white box around it and go down to remote control. Then you just hit learn and wist the knob/slider/button you want to control that item and wala. It's a bit finiky, some controls I had to hit more than once but, it worked. I was able to set up several faders & pan knobs to work off the sliders and knobs on my board.

I think the new update for sonar must have added that. Before you had to use the act console and I was not a big fan. At least not for setting up the console view.

Anyway, I don't know if you would have the same success with a usb interface or not. I did see everal of the mackie & tascam products listed in sonar as pre mapped controllers though. I'm sure they are usb.

Thanks for the update. I have used Cakewalk for years without a controler, so it is not that big of deal now. I stopped using Sonar for recording/mixing for awhile, but I am moving back to Sonar for mixing down my projects.

IF I had the money I would go for it. I am actually trying to save up for better Mic Pres. I was just trying to see what the better DAW controlers were out there, so I could then budget for it at a later date.

If anyone wants to go REALLY nuts, you could go for one of these

http://www.mixedlogic.com/

But before your keyboard stops working (drool) they're not cheap; Sweetwater has 'em for $2880 :=(

Still, 24 channels at once... (sigh) Steve

Now that does look nice! The whole 8 channel thing has always detoured me from wanting a controller too bad.
