Oh boy, here's my second "demo" work. Unfortunately, I had to break the rules on this one. I did almost all mixing through headphones or my buddy's aiwa system....I'm at college, not a whole lot of options! :) This summer though, I should be in business. However, the microphones used were all AKG d770s except for a C1000s on the vocals, lead guitar, and overhead. The drum kit is a yamaha hip gig (hard to get that big kick sound....you'll see. It took me forever to get a sound that was "decent"). Guitar is a shitty peavey through a fender princeton. Bass is a Aria Pro through a fender bxr 60. That's about it. Drums were thrown through a peavey unity 16 channel mixer, and bass guitar and guitar were all run direct into my Korg D16. Um, yea, I think that's it. My criticisms are that the guitar and bass sound kind of dead, but I am really tired of this mix already and didn't wanna mess with it anymore. Hihats are tinny in the beginning especially (thanks to a shitty microphone that I'll never ever use again). There are some overtones from the ride cymbal, but that honker is a nightmare. AHHHH, I'm rambling, here's the tune. Hope you like it.

Hey,

I really like the song....vocal harmonies are real cool.....the intro guitar had me ready for some Doobie Brothers (probably before your time) but then it turned, in a good way.....really enjoyed it....listening thru headphones so I cant comment too much on the mix and recording......really enjoyed this one......

yeah ... cool tune... reminds me of some Bob Mould stuff... which is a good thing. :)
First thing, seems like the vocals could be smoother ... any compression on those? I'd also *slightly* bring down the bg vox. Maybe a slight cut around 700-800Hz might help too..
I kinda wish there was more verb on the bg vox and the sax ... they seem a little too much in your face.
The clean gtr and the bass seem to be fighting with each other in the low-mids (right around 150-200hz), if you can cut a little out of the guitar it may sit better ... also I think a boost in hi mids on the guitar will help it bite more. Thats a judgement call because you got a cool jazzy thing happening there. Bass & Gtr are definitely stepping all over each other, though. Fixing that may also help the kick come through more.
Guitar solo is too loud, imho .. same with the hihat. Although you could probably get away with a little more snare throughout the tune.
Considering what you had to go through to get it this far ... good job! It deserves a remix though ... great vocal work.
