What is considered to be good mastering techniques

Sup everyone.
I know mastering is when u have completed a track or a whole cd. That is what u do.
What is the purpose of mastering. and how do u go about doin it well. What other equipent do u need to be able to master good. I was thinkin of buying this one.... ROLAND VS-1824CD it has a mastering tool kit. right now i have 2 Samson C01 studio condensor mics. For me i does the job. I need some mad help on this.
