I'm looking to get some nice monitors, and when I last recorded, I really liked the NS-10Ms that we went thru. However, they've been discontinued. What is another good monitor that is comparible in price and sound to the NS-10Ms? Or should i just try to get some 10Ms off eBay?

I have no idea why anyone would intentionally put their ears to that torture.... just take a look at a pair of Yorkville YSM-1s -- they're excellent nearfields, especially considering the price, and you won't hurt your ears in the process!

Well, if you gotta' have that general sound (fatiguing) . . . and that lack of bass . . . I'd say the Hafler M5.

Why do you think they're so bad? They have a very good flat sound for monitor purposes. I mean, I know I'm no expert, but I thought they sounded fine, and a lot of professional studios use them.

er... no.... they have a very harsh and colored sound for monitoring purposes....

They're anything BUT neutral-sounding!

Fingernails on a chalkboard?

Listen to Bear, I like the Yorkvilles too.

I was gonna say to just get a couple of raw tweeters and hook them up........pretty similar bass response.

I used to get headaches after a couple hours mixing on NS-10s. Now I use Mackie HR 824's. They have a flat response, an extended bass response, and I no longer get headaches. Granted, I have to be carful about thier slow transient response, but my headaches are gone.

Wow...
So many bad things to say about the NS-10Ms... I feel kinda stupid now for having a positive opinion about them.

So, the Yorkville YSM-1s are good? That's the going rate for a pair of them?

A set of good Events where you crack the tweeters? ;)

(Just kidding, I've actually never heard them.)

you'll notice all the big pro studios that you've seen using the have a set of big dady mainfields behind them. if you get a chance just try switching between ns10s and decent mainfields. you'll see why people don't like working with them.

of course they are useful in that situation, as being a real world reference. and i would probally buy a pair if i had 4*15 genelecs behind them.

try the cheaper dynaudio moniters for a decent nearfield.

When you guys say YSM-1s, do you mean the YSM-1, YSM-1i, or YSM-1p......or is it just a general thing and they all are good? Thanks

Also, I'm not sure if I should start a new post or not but I'll ask it anyway. I have the Active Reveals now. What would you suggest for a second pair for reference. Do you think it should be a comsumer pair to see how it translates to that or a different kind of studio montior? Thanks again

i have those active reveals. the only major problem i have with them that somtimes mixs on them don't translate that well to home stereos. try a set of computer speakers or hi fi speakers before you go spending big money.

Angry Percussionist,

If you already have the Reveals, you don't need the Yorkies. Although I haven't heard the Reveals, I have read from many sources that the two are very similar in sound.

They do share some characteristics but I wouldn't consider them very similar. I think it goes without saying that the YSMs have much deeper bass response for one.

I dont think the YSMs have a deeper bass response than anything

Dont Knock the NS10, they will get you there just fine. Monitors werent ment to sound pretty, they are a tool.

I use them religiously, without any bad results.
