hi,
I'm just wondering what is a music producer and what does he/she do?

In the music industry, "record producer" designates a person responsible for completing a master recording so that it is fit for release. In earlier days, record producers bore the title of A&R, for Artists and Repertory, which gives a clearer picture of their function: controlling the artists and choosing the material.

In the first part of the 20th century, the record producer's role resembled that of a film producer, in that the record producer supervised recording sessions, paid technicians, musicians and arrangers, and sometimes chose material for the artist. Now days, record producers have a more direct role in the musical process, which may include arranging, engineering the recording, and even writing the material.

If you're into HH or RnB, a "producer" is the new term for the sequencer/editor which is a far less "thrilling" title.

I posted this recently at another forum about certain misused terms such as "producer" and "a'capella"...
This is something like how I think it started... Picture a nice smoky bar...

MALE: Hey baby, you come here often?

FEMALE: Not too often...

MALE: Wow, you'za cutie -

FEMALE: Thanks, your not too bad yourself. So... What do you do?

MALE: I edit drum loops in my parent's basement.

FEMALE: (looks around hurriedly) "Waiter - Check please..."

MALE: I mean - What I'm trying to - I meant to say... I'm a producer.

FEMALE: You're a producer???

MALE: That's right. I'm all about producing and stuff.

FEMALE: Wow! Let's have sex

MALE: Okay - Let's get it on a' capella style...

Anyway, that's my take on it. It's the same way I became Prime Minister of Lichtenstein.

Depends.

In music, a producer is someone who takes a perfectly good song, tells the engineer to compress it until it bleeds, changes the entire style and feel of the song, insists that it would be good PR if you dated that biker chick, and basically ensures that nothing good ever comes of the exercise....

In movies, a producer is someone who (sometimes) schedules shoot locations (or manages the PAs who do), sometimes handles the finances at a fine-grained level, and generally makes sure the director has the support he/she needs to actually get the movie done.

This is as opposed to an executive producer. This is a person whose sole job appears to be to tell the people who are actually responsible for the production that there isn't enough money in the budget to do it right, so they'll have to make do with a shoe painted to look like a spaceship....

All joking aside, the producer is the project director of a recording project, usually an album. The buck stops at their desk. They hire and fire, determine when a track goes to print or gets cut. They have the final artistic say on every aspect of production. The executive producer determines how to pay for what the producer wants to do, and whether there's enough money to do it. Smart producers get input from the talent, the tracking, mixing, and mastering engineers, and actually pay attention to them. The best producers hire the right people, and then let them do their job. The world is full of asshole so-called producers who get away with telling other people how to do their jobs because they have money. I like to think I've become a pretty good producer. If you don't like what the mixing engineer is doing, you probably need a different mixing engineer. The key to being a good producer is finding people that you don't have to tell how to do their jobs, and then letting them do it. It is also finding talent who can actually play.-Richie
