What is a De-Esser and what does it do?

I have a De-Esser Plug in within my Logic Audio Platinum software, but I don't know what it essentially does.

Any help?

It's a compressor that has a tunable EQ in its side chain that can be set up to put a bandaid on sibilant or plosive vocals.
