I picked up an Alesis 3630 for $50 that was used in a smoke-free studio for 6 months before being replaced by upgraded Alesis. I know there aren't many fans of the 3630, but I like the coloration it gives some of my individual instruments when recording them in. I use this primarily for recording those instruments, and sometimes to fatten up vocals coming in.
I bought the DBX 286A mono compressor about 5 months ago, I use it for vocals only right now. I'm thinking about picking up another one to start compressing mixes externally instead of using software tools.
I just purchased the Delta 44 sound card.
I own the Korg Karma and the Roland JV-1010 synths, a Seagull Acoustic Guitar, and a Peavy M1 Studio Pro Condensor microphone (used for recording guitar, acoustic piano, and vocals, accompanied by a mic stand, shock mount, pop filter, and acoustically foamed vocal booth).
Right now I've got a $4,000-$5,000 budget and am looking to start moving to a primarily non-computer based set up. I will still use the computer for basic recording, sequencing, and some basic mixing, but all instruments being recorded in will be EQ'd (I plan on buying an external EQ) and compressed.
I plan on possibly buying the Roland XV-3080 sound module, so that leaves me about $3,500.
Any suggestions on what to upgrade to?
