ok many questions so little time. i have recently purchased a computer and i want to start my studio. im hoping somebody could tell me the equipment i need to make i very good sounding demo or a polished recording. i dont have much experience but i plan on making this a full time hobbie and am devoted to doing whatever it takes to get it done right. right now i just plan on doing songs with an acoustic guitar and vocals but eventually plan on adding a drum machine and so on and so on. i know i need a multitrack recorder and speakers and what not but could you tell me everything i need and give some good examples. i only plan on spending $2000 to start and work my way up from there. i thank you for your time and appreciate the help.

best advice I could possibly give you is to cruz around this BBS for about three or four weeks (thats about how long ive been here) before you go and drop 2grand- soak it all up- go though ALL the forums (its all homerecording- so yes even the drummer stuff applies) theres alot to learn around here- before you star askin a bunch of questions do a search- little button at the top right of your screen- some people around here can be real DICKS about that type of stuff- trust me- ive heard about it- then when youve soaked up as much info as you can without actually tryin it on your own rig- (which you dont have yet)- ask questions and be REALLY specific with what your trying to do and what you have in front of you- equipment and knowledge (or lack of either)- most people around here a really helpfull but they can get real crabby when they get a vague question in front of them- thats just my observations to date- just a noob lookin out for a noob.

by the way- to answer your question, some equip/ mics whatever are better suited to diff. types of music- (i.e. if its just you and all you do is sing- you dont need 8 simultaneous inputs to record- ya know what i mean)

- welcome- enjoy

i have a PC it has 80gig and 7200rpm and i wanna record pretty much everything but im into mostly folk and altcountry.

Here's what you'll probably need:

* Audio card (not SoundBlaster) - This goes into your computer and allows you to record

* Mic preamps - Sometimes the audio card will have a "breakout box" that will also have mic preamps

* Recording/mixing software - This talks to your audio card and also enables you to mess with your recordings. Most companies will have a downloadable demo version which I strongly suggest you do to find out what you like and don't like

* Mics - No one mic is the best for everything. Again, the best way is to try mics you can afford on what you want to record and buy what you like.

* Monitors (speaker) - Most likely, for your price range, nearfield monitors will be your best choice.

The above can be gotten for $2K but don't expect miracles at first - just have fun! You'll find out soon enough there's no magic piece of gear or software that'll make your home recording sound like commercial CDs.
