what exactly is wrong with recording with sb live?

sorry for the newbe question. Please bare with. what exactly is wrong with recording with sb live.? I'm asking because I own a br-8 which uses zip disks. I take the br-8 zip disk put it in my computer. and convert it to a wave file. It all stays digital. no signal loss( I know it's a mouthful). Here's where cubase comes in. I use cubase to compress and limit (or add pluggin effects)after the fact. when i save the song with effects as a wave. Is the soundcard a factor? If I don't do the actual recording with the soundbaster, do I need worry? Please respond.
 
The sound blaster live is not touching your files directly. However, you are listening to the SB Live and the speakers you have connected to it. You are making compression & effects choices based on how the playback system sounds.

So the direct answer to your question is no, the SB Live isn't messing with your files.
 
Jay is correct. There's nothing truly bad about an SBLive; it's a great card to start out on.

But it is only a 16-bit card.... kinda like playing basketball in a room with only a 7-foot-high ceiling. If you get roudy and jump up you can scrape your hands or hit your head. A 24-bit card allows you to play basketball in a room with a 16-foot ceiling; you've got a lot more headroom to work with.

If your music comes out of the speakers sounding the way you like it--- go for it!
 
I'm having a DAW built for me and had an SB live dropped in till I choose a more semi-pro card. I've had a couple people suggest SB live Platinum? Any comments on this card ? alternative suggestions?
I plan to keep the SB live onboard for simple midi applications in the long run
 
If you want to do some serious recording, soundblaster just isn't up to snuff. The AD/DA converters will never sound as good as what you could get for not too much more. They're fine for gamers but not pro audio. In all fairness though, I've heard a tune John Sayers did with one when he was trying to make a point about "it ain't what you got, it's what you do with it" that was pretty fuckin good IMHO.
