hey, ive been doing music tech and recording for about a year or 2 and am starting to build a small studio. i have been taught by a local youth centre by a trained technician, although hes very good at recording. he does it diffrently to what i ussually see.

i have only a few bits of equipment so far, a behringer xenyx 1222fx, a shure sm57, novation xiosynth 25 midi controller and a cheap senheiser microphone plus various instruments eg electric drums, acoustic guitar, bass.

the way i have been recording is, ive ussually just recorded acoustic guitar with the sm57 and plugged in straight into my mixer via xlr and eqaulized it on the mixer and recorded onto a samsung laptop with cubase le. similar with other things, just recorded with a mic and straight in.

ive seen people use audio interfaces such as m-audio cheapo;s and it seems the audio quality is not much better. im really intrested in learning good ways to record.

ive got a fairly large budget for this, although part of it will go towards krk rokit 5;s.

around 750-850 pounds. would really appreciate some good advice.

thanks, jack x

Although I use the bare minimum to record, I've been trying different recording methods for years.

In my own opinion: the best way, 1 instrument at a time. I've always done percussion last, melody first, vocals second. I used to record 1 live take (guitar and vox) and then percussion second. I find that breaking your arrangement up into pieces is valuable to achieving the best quality sound. It's also practical when it comes to mixing and mastering.

I'm not much help in the way of equipment, my genre is folk-esq. A simple condenser mic and audio interface does the job for me.
