Thanks in advance for your advice. I've been reading all kinds of information about the equipment we need to get started, but a lot of it seems dated. I am running Windows XP and have an Audio Technica AT2020USB mike and that is it so far. We are only interested in doing voice production. I work at a radio station and do voiceovers there now, but would like to see if there is a bigger market out there for myself and my spouse. I have heard that Audacity is a good software program? What else do we need? I'd like to keep my costs down to about $500 if that is possible. We are brand new at this and appreciate any ideas!

Audacity is ok - its free opensource - Reaper is better.

either one should be fine for voice over -

I have never used a USB mic and I have heard they are not very high quality - but it looks like a decent mic.

You can download both those DAWs free

What you need is a good 2 channel interface (trust me, the 2nd channel will come in handy for music, effects, etc.), a decent dynamic or condenser mic, a mic cable, a desk stand, some software, some decent headphones, and maybe a pop filter. That's doable for $500, but you have to cut back on the mic a bit. For a good starter setup, I'd do this:

Plus Reaper software for about $50 Total- about $490

Good Luck-Richie
