I’d like to hear what your favorite EQ plugin is for mixing, and why. I’ve been using TC native EQ, but it has some quirks I can’t stand.

Anything that says UAD on it.

Cambridge, Pultec, even the EQ in the channel strip plug is pretty nice.

Sonalksis is pretty sweet too - Especially in the top-end.

I've been using that Paris EQ for a while now, myself, and it is nice.

UAD Cambridge for clean cuts
UAD Pultec for some added magic.
Occasionally the Ultrafunk EQ.

If you need 10 bands of eq, your tracking is seriously fucked up.

Not necessarily. I use a lot of samples, for instance, that are sometimes already “seriously fucked up”. So I don’t have any control over the sound until the mix down stage anyway. But there are other uses too. I recorded a baseline the other day that sounded perfect all the way through, except for one note (which I only hit twice) that was supper resonant. Instead of scraping the take, and hoping to play it as well the next time around, I used TC Native EQ to drop the offending frequency a couple of decibels. Then again, I am new to this, so chances are my tracking is seriously fucked up ;)

From the plugs I've heard, I don't really like any of them very much. I'll agree with the rest that the best of the bunch is the Waves, but I kinda like the built in Samplitude EQ also. I really need to hear the UAD stuff methinks... Currently looking for some hardware EQ though.

Ok, so waves makes a Q10. They also make a Q1, Q2, Q3 etc. Why would some one use the Q1 instead of the Q10? I figure if you only need to boost or cut one frequency, just boost or cut it with the Q10. What I’m I missing?

the Q10 takes up considerably more cpu usage than the Q1

I use Rennaisance. it is so easy to use and it sounds great. I heard Q series are not so great. And the others... are usually not so versatile and graphical. i am no professional, so i like to see visually what i am doing to a track. so if you are looking for something easy, then go with Rennaisance, sounds good, wicked easy! I am sure there are a lot better out there, but hey, some of us are too lazy to figure out how to use them.

I like Waves Ren and Q series. I wish the Q series gave you control over the slope of the roll-off freqs. though. I use the Ren eq a lot for this reason alone, although I would prefer the Q. It's odd to me that you can't adjust this.

The PSP is sweet but for most day to day work I use Sonic Timeworks' 8-band parametric EQ. I know for awhile it was bundled with the producer edition of Sonar. I bought mine back when I still used Cakewalk pro audio 9.0. It's got the most intuitive interface and features an RTA which can be very handy ... and it just plain sounds good.
