I was just wondering what drives you guys to make music and be in this industry. This industry isn't for everybody. It takes a certain person, drive, never give up, and passion for what you do. I love what I do, but it was a hard road, and I know there is more road to go.

In this industry, a normal person (that is a person in for it as a hobby) would say forget it after he gets played or can't make that one hit production. I've been at this for 10 years and have failed, dusted myself off and started over and over until I got it right. Not everyone will do that. I've seen artists give up, come and go, and I'm still here...
I believe you have to work hard to see results. If you don't put in work, you won't see it happen...

Do you ever watch the show Driven and think, man if they went through all that and still made it, I can do it?

You know this might seem strange but giving up never even occured to me. It just dont seem natural. I couldnt imagine life with out this for real. like imagine life with no air. what drives me cant really say but whatever it is it is something deep in me i cant explain. good question

I drive myself!

i know it might sound boastful but im part of the statistic that says that i grew up in a single parent home, from low income houseing and one of the worst areas in the city (back when i lived in N.Y.C., Crown Heights babe!) so im not suppose to make it out alive after 20, plain and simple. Music was my deliverance from the world at large, it kept me out of trouble and made me want to learn about my abilities and limitations while pursuing it. im not even goin to lie, when i started doing music back in the 5th grade i wanted to be an R&B singer!
The only reason that changed wasn't because i couldn't sing but because my group hit me to the rap game. They said i was pretty good and wouldn't mind if i got down with them, now im one of the top 3 in my area, Go figure!

But it was my perseverance and the time i took to learn about my craft which will make me one of the greats one day. No help, alot of encouragement and a good woman by your side don't hurt either.

Now excuse me, i have a classic to go drop!

I hear ya!
That is the Key to succeding period! To stay with it and never give up. PERSERVERANCE!
Music is truely a HOBBY for me. But I take projects serious, so don't get it twisted!! I will work on a song, or my part of the song, until it is DONE to the best of my ability.(I have yet completed a whole song)(Lyrics, structure, mix, and mastered)
I couldn't do Music full time....I could if I needed to, but I am in to too many things at one time. Music is my escape from the pressures of LIFE, my way to vent feelings, and my way to share experiences.
But yeah, DON'T give up if MUSIC is what you're trying to do! There are peaks and valleys in all things, but all of your labor will be in vain if you don't see it until the end and put your ALL into it at ALL times..............If MUSIC is what you want to do, STAY in the GAME and LEARN all that you can and APPLY it to YOUR craft....The key word is "YOUR CRAFT"...Be Original and Be Strong and NEVER give up! ALWAYS BE A STUDENT!!!!!!

I think I'll say me as well.

I drive myself to do whatever suits me. Music always kept me from going to do dirt with the homies (although there were some times I'd have to get directly involved with other things back in the day). It's something that I can be proud of. I've been through my successes and failures just like everyone else, but when I fail, I learn from it and when I succeed, I help out those who helped me get to that level. Like 20/20 said, I couldn't live without music now, if I did I'd be stuck with mainstream radio and that sucks (I'd rather hang myself from a shower rod on the 5th story of a high rise). Now as for a business, I aim to go into multiple business ventures in order to keep money coming from different angles and still enjoy what I do, but if I can't enjoy it as a personal hobby as well (which also helps me express myself) then what's the point.

I'ma DJ, so I get a high from people responding from the music I play, but now it's my music, and now I want the world to vibe off of my music, no matter how long it takes to get it to them. This music industry grind is absolutly insane. It consumes so much of your life, for such a small percentage of success. But I see it as a test of faith. We weren't brought to long hard grind for nothing. It's something that God has placed in all of us. Even if we walked away from music, it would find a way of coming back to us. Which brings me to another question how long is you grind. Mine 8 years.

15 as an emcee, almost 4 as a beat maker. Both have gotten better over time.

I get frustrated at times.. So I may take time away from the music.. But I always come back... and it because I have put to much time effort and money into it.. Just the thought of not trying makes me feel like I have failed.. Even if I never make that 1 hit as long as I continue to try I will be somewhat satisified.....

Nice posts. All good reasons not ta give up. Keep it movin!...

True!
I guess success is what you make it!
People have different levels of success too. Some people don't think they are successful in their endeavour unless someone deems or ordains it as such. I say F them. Create your own level of success. Only you know where you come from and for most of us the sky is the limit. That is what keeps the Hunger. You obtain success, on your standards, but your still hungry. That make you keep banging it out!
I'm fairly new to the recording aspect of music, but I have been involved in creating music for over 10 years. My first stint in a studio, I was about 12 yrs old. I wish I had stuck in that environment and learned that aspect of it more.

I can't quit. It's just not an option for me.... Even if I never "make it" bigtime with a deal or what not, music is in me. I can't stop being me, therefore I can't stop my music. As long as I'm alive, my music will be alive. With a few thousand fans like it is now, or with millions of fans (which I hope it grows to).

I only wish I knew when it began... I started on a garage sale ($7) guitar and two tape recorders (the one's with a tiny electret mic on top) when I was 6....

I remember I'd record me (vocals or otherwise) over some song by putting one deck's mic up to the other's speaker :p .... Not bad for that age (I think)... I thought I had invented something.. Which I now know as "sound on sound".

I remember my first scratches were done by accident and I loved the sound of 33's played at 45... I found Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" 12" single in my house at complete random (sometime around in the late 80s)... Understand that my household was soul, jazz, rock, blues, gospel, etc... Hip hop wasn't the norm at all. Turns out that the album was from some family friend who came over before I was born and somehow forgot about it being with my parents... I think of that sometimes, when I get low... I have to believe it's a destiny for me (motivation wise)....

Which reminds me... I need to dig that up!!!

Sweet thread.....

Sheer love of music, some business insight, and my girl kicking my ass, telling me to rhyme and make beats, and make sure later on our kids will have a home and food in their mouths.
