What does everyone think of this Mixer?

Hi, I just recently stumbled into this site and I gotta admit I got a long way to go to learn all this stuff about homemade music stuff. I saw this link here and thought this will be a pretty good start but just want to see what everyone's oppinion on this item? is it ok, bad, not worth it or just you get what you pay for....?

Basically I have about $500 to spend but would like to squeeze in as much equipments that I can to get started on music recording and editing. I'll be doing most of this through my computer so if anyone wants to give me some tips and links i'd appreciate it.

what exactly will u be using it for?....if you just need the preamps, you can do better with standalone preamps......
 
You basically get what you pay for, which isn't much. I'm less of an anti-Behringer person than many, but I still get the hives over their gear: their buisiness practices stink. However, I don't hate them quite enough to keep me from using it for certain jobs. I have 5 of the 602s, and use them for "disposable" headphone amps and line-level monitor mixers in my room. They are adequate for that duty, btu I wouldn't use them to record with. The build quality is highly variable, and I have a couple of them that have problems (dead phantom power, noisy preamps, noisy mix buses). Even the good ones are pretty noisy. They are basically mostly good for being headphone amps, and if someone knocks them over or spills beer into them, I don't particularly care. That's what I mean by "disposable".

However, don't let that stop you: they *are* just about the cheapest way to get a couple of pres and a mix bus. If you are completely destitute, they willl get you going. However, you will certainly outgrow them sooner than later, and have to spend yet more money to replace them- and they will have pretty much zero resale value. The motto around here, based on a lot of peoples' painful experience, is "buy right or buy twice..".

My real gut-feel advice would be to spend a bit more for a better piece of gear, like one of the small Mackies, one of the Spirit Folios, pretty much anything *but* the Behringer. At leat with those, you can always move them into the job of being a keyboard or drum submixer if you outgrow them, and they will have _some_ resale value. Your mileage may vary, though.
