all up in yo grill!
what exactly would be used? my home theater reciever?

Stereo power amplifiers. Bryston, Hafler, Crest, Crown, Mackie, Peavey etc. all make a bunch of models at different power (wattage) levels. They take a line level signal, and raise it to speaker level.
Your home theatre reciever probably (in fact, certainly - if you connect speakers to it) has a power amplifier stage. It also has a lot of extra circuitry that you don't need, and isn't really the best tool for the job.

wouldnt be the best tool but....

but it could still be done though right? what would the extra circuitry hurt? like if i dont use any of the dsp effects or something

You can use one but the main problem with using a home theater receiver is that you don't know exactly how much the tone/eq controls are affecting your sound. With a basic amplifier there are no tone or eq controls so you tend to get a sound that is much closer to what is actually coming out of your mixer than with a home stereo.

At this point in time, I have moved away from the home stereo receiver I began with and am now using a "vintage" (ie at least 25 year old) Dynaco power amp.
