Hello everybody,

My name is Jason and I've just joined these
newsgroups in the last month.

I've got a bunch of songs on my MP3 site and
I'd be curious to see what you think of them.
Your fresh ears will provide me with excellent
insight, I'm sure. I'd like to draw particular
attention to 'Skyhouse and Scarlet', 'Feel', and
'Winter Opened My Eyes'.

My URL is:

http://www.mp3.com/jasonrubero

I've got about 10 other songs posted there. They
were all produced at home, entirely by myself,
using the following gear:

- Cool Edit Pro 1.2
- Event Darla soundcard
- Rode NT-1 microphone
- Alesis Monitor 1's
- ART Tube MP pre-amp

If any of you want to discuss the details of my
(or your) productions, LET'S TALK!

Thanks in advance for listening.

i hear some major beatles influences going on here. on skyhouse and scarlet where did you get the mellotron samples? and am i to understand you recorded all these songs with just a rode nt1? if thats the case then great work:)

Very impressed Jason, all things great take time and I read on your website that you took a couple of years to put your album to gether? great stuff and i hope you make a bundle on it. Got any radio airplay? I'm getting a great little collection of sweet music and yours is at the top of my list at the moment! thanks for the tunes, Charva.

dude it sounds great i caant believe u got that sound out of nt1. is it modified, hehe

feel:
nicely panned drums, and minimal chordage, which seems to work ok. I can hear Lennon in there too...especially in the telephone sounding vocals. I think that this is a pretty neat tune with neat sound effects/gtrs around 2:00. certainly not club dance music;)
They're a lot of interesting elements in this song, but I feel that I really kinda heard them all after 30 secs, or so. It's not boring, mind you, but the lack of something fresh doesn't really ever come...and I'd see about cutting the song length down, therefore. It is very decently recorded, and I can see the hard work/arranging you must have put into it.

skyhouse and scarlet:
oh..my..the Beatles...."Julia...Julia"...nice tone on the ac gtr, good vocals, and tasteful use of sounds, tremelo. This does sound like a Beatles tune...if that is good or bad....complete with the Strawberry fields sound, backwards cymbals...etc. Your stuff is very good, but I unfortunatly see the Beatles comparision as a downfall, as it takes away from YOUR originality. If you never heard the white album, I'd say bravo. Now mind you, this is really my ONLY complaint with your stuff. Otherwise, I like it very much. Put some of yourself into it somehow....and take away the Lennon sound...eh?

winter opened my eyes:
your intros are reallllllly gooood. especially this one. Nice and current sounding. Now this is where you can shine. Nice harmon mute on the tpt. I can deal with the long intro, because this is very interesting, fresh, and isn't a song imitator. I guess you can't change your voice to NOT sound like Lennon/yoko...
You've got very good instrumentation, from vibes to the synths...makes for very interesting listening. Nice recording quality and stereo field going too. For some reason, I'm expecting Miles Davis to start soloing... ah...a snippit of clarinet too..At 4:00...I am liking this song the best of the three, so far. I'd take a change of vocal sound at this point...maybe just a naturally EQ'd sound would be nice....and some more melodic singing...or maybe not:D Very laid back stuff....kids at the end too...ha!

You have a good imagination, and milk your equipment good. Keep your stuff "original", and I think you'll be a happier camper, as well as your listeners. All the Beatles lovers can just put on their old albums, while your give them "new jrubero-isk tune-age"

REALLY nice stuff! Yea, you have the Beatles thing going on for sure, and while I like this kind of thing myself a lot, what mixmkr says about letting more of your own style through is true from a commercial view point. On the other hand, screw all that, I like listening to it, Strawberry Fields and all. Good work.

THANK YOU ALL!

Many thanks to all of you who listened to some
of my songs... especially those of you who took
the time to write back with your thought and
impressions.

It is very helpful to hear from fellow home-produced artists, because your ears are impartial but you know what home-made music is really all about.

Yeah, I do like to pretend I'm the Beatles every once in awhile... but it is really only because they represent the GOLDEN AGE of studio experimentation (something I'm really into).

Here's a bunch of short comments in response to some of your questions and feedback:

1) Yeah, it was all done with one mic.
2) Yeah, some of my songs should be shorter.
3) Yeah, some of my songs should be more original.
4) Yeah, I put a LOT of time into arrangements and production.
5) No, I don't get any radio play (other than on MP3 stations). I'm not interested in commercial success at all. I just want to make enough money on each album to fund the next one. And, thank God, this has been the case so far!

Thanks for giving me some good honest feedback. I'll try to return the favor (or at least pass it on...)

Cheers!
