what do you think of this mix(indie/rock)

basically i recorded this song a little differently than i usually do. i miked up the kick, snare and toms as usual. i miked the hi hat for the first time so then i moved the OH's about a foot from the cymbals. the snare needed to be replaced so i used drumagog for just the snare. the guitars are emulated with amplitube metal. there just two guitar tracks, which is a little different from what i usually do. i didnt hard pan them because in my last thread, you guys told me that it was too separated. so these are about 70 both ways. there arent any vocals yet because they havent written them all the way.

let me know what you guys think. if theres anything im doing wrong or what. haha i know that at about :55 the drumagog on the snare doesnt pick the two flams...thats an easy fix.

Well, I liked the composition, but... It could use some more interest to it. Your guitars seemed to be a little monotonous. Maybe add a little to the lead guitar to do a little more improvisation.. well, not improv per se, but something that feels improvised. Like, a few guitar fills here and there, and something that kind of brings the mix up off the first floor and the basement, and into the upstairs and sometimes the attic. Give it a bit more movement is all I'd say. Like, during the part from about 1:30 on, it needs more. This feels like its building into a climax, that just never gets there.

Mixing: I didn't like the guitars panned the way they were. I think they should have still moved a little further towards the center. Although, I liked them a bit more when I realized that they kind of had a call and response feel. Tonal wise, I thought it was a little dirty, but not necessarily in a good way. Like, it needs a bit more clarity. Drums, I can't say too much since I'm not much of a drummer, but I'd have to say that at times they don't feel strong enough. I don't think I like the panning too much on them. They just never seem to find that right place to sit is my personal feeling on the matter.

Otherwise, its a good mix and composition, and I can't wait to hear it once everything is all together.
 
I think the weirdness of the guitar panning comes from nothing really holding the center down. Personally, I'd put an awesome bassline in, and make sure it sounds good. Then the guitars wouldn't sound so "out there".... There's a point in the middle where the bass leaves completely, and that's even worse. Maybe record a few more guitar parts for a rhythm which provide some glue.

I don't know. That's all personal preference. If the vocals come in consistently, that could provide the same effect... Hard to say when there aren't any vocals.

The sounds in and of themselves sound great. I like the drum sound. Guitars sound good, too... Just post it when it's got vocals and I'll give a more substantive review...

So far, so good...

Someone is going ot go up one side of me and down the other for this...

I happen to dig hard panned guitars sometimes. Maybe not 100 percent to the left and to the right but you know. 70 and 70 or whatever.

It works for some of the more guitar driven rock.

This would be a good example of it. I like the guitars panned the way they are. It helps accentuate the fact that your guitars aren't playing the same eaxact riffage on the left and right.

It works here.

Purists will say they are too far apart, i say to hell with the purists in this case.

but as it i kinda like how you got it mixed.

Kick needs something but thats gergs territory.
 
when you guys mic the hi hat and use the overheads as cymbal mics, do you guys gate them at all?
