What do you think: Motu 828MkI or Firestation?

It's looking like my band is about to invest into recording equipment. The deal is looking like I'm to buy the interface and as a band, we're going to buy a baby HUI. Anyways, I thought the 828 was perfect... and then I saw the Firestation. These two products seem to be really alike and pretty much in the same price range used ($400 or so). Can anyone compare these two feature wise, or even compatability wise? One of my big concerns is this: is the Firestation compatible with N-track? (possibly a question for the N-track forum ;)) Another large concern: what are the differences in the mic preamps? We're not going to be able to afford outboard preamps to begin with. Has anyone used both and can comment? All opinions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

On a budget, the Firestation. Musician's Friend currently has it on special @ 499. That's a damn good price. I dig Presonus' preamps, too. The MOTU 828 looks nice, but it's $300 more. Not sure if the Firestation does 96k, or if that's an issue for you.
 
Hey! I actually found that the firestation has less options. You have to use some kind of special adapter to use SPDIF and MIDI, and I need both of those straight up, so I'm thinking about getting a used 828 MKII after Christmas. I just like them better. I'll probably add at least one Blue Tube preamp, so I'll still have presonus preamps. :D I'm pretty much set on the 828 now. :) Thanks for replying, tho! Later!

M-Audio Delta 1010

dont waste your money on anything else.

Without being sinical, and rude....I dont mean this in a bad way, bur.......your not about to get a recording contract next week, so if you cant afford the $300 extra for the Delta 1010, just wait till yall have the money

I don't have the money for a PCI emulator, and I'll be using this with a laptop, so firewire and portability is the rule right now. It's for personal use primarily, as well, so for right now, firewire is looking like the way to go for me. :) Thanks for posting, tho, and actually, before this, I wanted a 1010 and almost got one, but right now portable is one of the main issues. Firewire just fits the bill better right now. Anyone else have anything?

I have a firestation and about the adapters, it comes with it

if you don't mind two little things haning off the back of the unit.. lol

The Firestation is a nice unit and the adapters are not a problem at all..
 
yea i agree with lost studios

it really gives you great sound and for 499 it's a great deal

I got mine for around 600.... darn holiday seasons.. heh
 
Hello guys! I have decided against the Firestation simply because you can't use all if it's I/O's and use the Lightpipe at the same time. This won't be a big deal up front, but I do plan on expanding our gear later and that would be a definite plus. :) I think we're going to shoot for an 828MKii and go from there. dkijc, if you would like, you can check our stuff out at www.christianmp3.com in the Metal section and look for Uncondemned.
