Taking the slow road
just wondering, some mics have flat, rolloff, or pad. -10

Exactly...use the pad to attenuate (decrease) the level of signal going to the preamp. Drums would be a perfect example but only if/when the preamp is pushed into clipping.

I thought a mic pad was to actually keep the Mic electronics from overloading.

If the preamp is clipping, just turn it down.

or insert a pad before it if the gain can't get as low as needed.

i use it to give more sound of the preamp than the mic

I agree. I was just saying that sometimes you are overloading the mic itself (at very high spls), so the problem CAN be there.

I could be in for learning something new here...could be wrong but I thought the pads are typically in line between the mic and the preamp. I usually use inlines so that stands true but the pads built into the mics,...I donno. I retract my previous and would like to slip back into my dark musty cave at this time

Either way...for loud stuff :D

oh gawd...get out man! Save yourself before it's too late!

Them there's Boogie Boards is a great discovery! I'm hoppin on now! hop hop

In line Pads......they are wonderful....I should buy some. what brands to stay away from, what brands are glorious?

I never thought of that but that would be a good way to compare the color of a given preamp. I would like to see a mic with more than one pad to take off ALOT of dB's and see how much you can make the preamp stick out. Interesting thought. Ive never thought of that. :)

i know, me neither, then about 2 days ago, i was sitting here contemplating the fact that when i'm using balanced line, i don't need to push the pre as much b/c of the little increase in levels, and the corresponding ratio to the meter on the pre and the mixer, and i was thinking about how it might be less pre sound b/c of that lower setting on it...it's just a theory, but anyway, i decided to try it.

i also wanted more coloration and more compression and more sound also along the chain to the comressor's amp so i boosted it there too, and then used the oft maligned starved plate tube effect on the oft maligned berry co's eq and it was nice to hear all the gear doing their thing.

Pads on microphones attenuate the signal going thru the mics electronics.

Yes. Now who wants to trade some of their pads for my impedance transformers. ;)
