What does THIS button do?
So my dad has this kit, its a peavey radial pro anniversary set. Apparently it is like 3-ply maple with some kind of carbon-based reinforcement. Well, what Im trying to say is, its nice. So, this is the problem: My dad can NOT tune drums for shit. I hate to say it but the old man whos been playing for 30-some years is stuck in the 70s with that "cardboard" kit sound. Do you guys think there is some way I can convince him to let me tune them? He is out of town right now... actually out of the country... Do you think hed get mad if I just tore everything apart and re-tuned them? I mean what is the worst that can happen he will come back and tune everything back to how he had it before and I will be dissappointed that he turned a super nice kit into something that a 200 dollar starter kit can compare with... what do you think?

Thats tough to answer not knowing your father. Although tuning them, might pay off for you and him in the end, he will probably get upset for the first little while. So ask yourself if it's worth it.

Most drummers tune drums the way they like them to sound - even if others don't

I suspect your dad would be very unhappy if you mess with his tuning without talking to him first.

If you are allowed to play 'em, tune 'em.

If not, stay away from the damned things. ;)

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Wash your hands next time! :D

out of the country eh?
good kid...
i wouldve been more focused on a party rather than tuning my drums...
if he'd be that angry about the tune of the drums, than just buy your own, i know thats a heavy deal, but hey they are his drums

Yes, he'd get mad. I don't know if it would be a little or a lot. I know if I went away and someone re-tuned my kit without telling me, I'd be a little irked. There are plenty of drummers who don't like their drums to sound like mine. There are people who don't like the heads I like, the sticks I like, the cymbals I like and there are plenty of drummers I know that I keep wondering "what are you thinking?". Your drums are a reflection of who you are. If that's how your dad likes them to sound, let him.

Tune your kit really well and wait for him to ask "How do you make them sound so good?".

That will be the time.

OK well this is the deal. Yeah I'm allowed to play them. I've used them for recording before, I dunno if anyone remembers but I posted a few clips on here a while ago but they kind of sucked. Anyway, this is the deal. He uses Rem-O's. Yeah, those dampening rings with all the foam that completely deaden any sound that comes from any of the drums. Hes got that on all drums except the snare and guess which drum actually sounds good? heh. I do have my own kit, and I have it tuned the way I want and whatnot, and everytime I try to impress him with anything wiether it's my playing or the sound of my kit he always gets bitter and tells me "how god damn loud i play" and how I "need to learn to play quiet cuz you're going to go fucking deaf" so I guess no matter what I can't really impress him. Maybe I will call him and ask if I can mess with his drums while hes gone... Seriously I just think it's retarded that he paid SO much for a super hella nice kit and the only thing nice about it is the way it looks...

Some people have crazy styles, and there are little things that they prefer. Although irrelivant, my bedroom needs to be organized. It is just a weird obsession, that my room always needs to be clean. So if i went away, and someone changed up my room, even if it looked better, i would be upset, because it wouldn't be the way i like it.

So i guess it is the same kind of idea. Plus if you got your own set, why care what his is like?

I've got the same situation with my neighbor. I tune my kit fairly normally, for rock. He's been playing for around 30 years or so. He's got a really nice Yamaha double-bass kit with 7 toms, 2 snares, and around 10 cymbals. All decent equipment, and a nice Pearl Rack too! On top of the tuning of EVERY drum being horrid, he sets the kit up very odd. I'm a smaller guy, so my kit is more "compact", I've got things right where I like them. So everytime we decide to jam, I go over and look and sound like a begginer turd!!!
I can play them, just sucks!!!!!

He's got more bounce on the beater-side of his bass drums than the highest tom on my set!!!!
I want to tune them for him sooooo bad. Nice drums deserve to sound REALLY good, and his set's waaaaay better than mine, yet mine plays and sounds better!

yea I know how it is playing on other people's kits. Sometimes I come across guys that actually have thier kit set up really well and I can play better on thiers than mine lol.
As far as tuning my dads drums I'm not going to do it. It really is like someone coming in my room and cleaning it or something (which has happened on a couple of occasions and i can't stand it)
I wish I could play my kit here daily but I have to leave it at my guitarist's house 40 minutes away cuz that's where we practice. It's kind of a PITA to haul it around everywhere too.. I almost wish I had a second set of cymbals and an identical kit so I could have one set up here too lol
Anyway, thanks for the advice guys.. I really appreciate it :D

I have played on my share of crappily tuned kits. I like to think I am pretty good at tuning a drum having played for as long as I have and working in a drum shop for 6 years. What I usually do is just ASK if I can tune the drums. Most guys say yes as they haven't a clue what tuning is all about and they are curious to see what I come up with. They have just put up witha crappy sounding kit for all this time not knowing any better. Just ask the old man. Worst case he says no.

You should be thankful you're lucky enough to have a dad who lets you have a drumkit. I didn't get one until I was 27. Sounds like a cool dad to me.

haha well my dad's got a couple kits. he has roland v-drums, that peavey (which is one of the nicest kits i've ever seen), and an origional 70's ludwig vista lite that he usually lets me play cuz the bass drum is cracked and it's kind of tore up from gigging. On top of that I have my Pacific kit which sounds better than all of his kits combined but we won't tell him that ;)

personally, i would kick your ass. he tunes them the way he wants them to sound, if he didnt want them to sound like that he would probably try tuning them different

How badly cracked is it? I used to work with signs a long time ago and we had a special solvent that would bond acrylic. It was a thin liquid. Can't remember what it was called, but I can find out. That would fix the bass drum! I had a bud who made aquariums using that stuff!

Vista lites are cool!

word Phil. It's pretty bad. It's completely broke all the way through the bottom. You know how vista lites have that weak spot where they bonded the shell in the factory? It went all the way across. My dad tried to fix it one time I guess he managed to get ahold of a router and took off a lot of material to try to prep it for some place to "weld" it and he messed it up pretty bad. It's still playable it just sounds funny. I managed to find the resonant hoop and lugs and put everything back together to be able to play it. Maybe I could get some pictures when he comes back with the digital camera....

try a piecewise,if you like the sound and if its just for recording use a different kick drums, maybe your pacific , and if you like other snares or something just put one together, i have seen alot of crazy basterdized drumsets put together for a pretty good recording sound

Yes, get pictures! If you have a nice clean seam this liquid will join it very solid!! It's like acetone or something. It's used for acrylic and plexiglass fabrication. It'll do the trick! I'll find out from my old boss what it's called.
