Hey Rob.

The unmastered link you posted isnt working.

The mastered one is though.

Ill wait to listen to the unmastered one first.

thanks...i actually noticed it and fixed it right right after it went live. check now. thanks for the heads up!

One thing id say is to anyone listening to these two samples is make sure you listen to them at even volumes.
Louder COULD be precieved as better, when maybe it isnt.

My opinion?

I think he brought the bass out nicely.
And the added presence is nice too.
He did a good job of compressing the mix IMO, it dosent sound squashed, it still has plenty of dynamics.

The best way to tell that was that big tom/conga fill in the intro, it didnt get topped off. Good work id say.

Cool guitar solo too.

Hey thanks guys! I was just kind of looking for an outside oppinion on this. This is a guy we've paid to do the job, so we just wanted to see what some other peeple thought.

Thanks for taking the time to listen through!

I have to agree, the mastering put just the right icing on the cake here.

Yeah, thanks I was kind of thinking that as well, but like i said, I like to have some ears away from the source give it a listen.

Thanks people!

Nice job. Both versions sound good, but the mastered one is definitley more full. Nice.

Good Job, Good Song

The mastering sounds good. It has a nice sense of "openness." Not overly compressed. Good mix, too -- everything seems to sit nicely in the stereo spectrum.

I also really enjoyed this song. I'm a fan of this style of music -- don't know what to call it exactly, perhaps "faux reggae" (if that makes any sense). Before everything kicked in, I thought this was a cover of a Steve Miller song.

Catchy chorus. I also like the live video of this song on your site (of course, the sound quality is somewhat compromised, but the live vibe shines through). You guys have a cool, unique style.

Nice job. Keep up the good work.

To me there's no comparison. The mastered version is hands down the better. More presence, in your face but not over the top. Excellent work!

Wow. I wish I could do that! That is a good illustration for gumbies like me of what mastering could offer a song. It would be nice to hear what techniques were used to do "that". Not to copy them and expect similar results for a completely different song and cheap home equipment. But just to learn more about audio shaping.

The song itself is a fun jaunt. I like it.

Thanks

cool...

not even my preferred style of music to listen to, and i STILL liked it. I dont know mastering, so i'll just comment on the song itself...

it reminds me of SOMEthng Ive heard before, i just cant put my finger on it! Its a compliment to say that if i played it and asked "what is this? I cant remember..." I think the guys would all sit around and give ideas who they thought it was!

those steel drums dropped in or whatever, that was kinda neat...very melodic. Interesting to listen to. I wanna say something cool and tech, like, "I bet those steel drums really swang the meter", but i dont know enough to say anythign like that, so i can just say it sounds very good.

good show, old sod.

It's a little hard to make a fair comparison due to the level differences. Compensating for that, the two versions are really not that different. Your mastering engineer added a little sheen and tightened it up a bit.

The original track sounds good, so it really didn't need too much done to it in my opinion. The good thing is the mastering engineer did not overdo it, he kept it close to the original and just enhanced it a bit. Sometimes doing a little is harder than doing a lot, so that was a good choice on the mastering engineer's part.

Thanks for the feedback guys! We pretty much dig the masters from our CD...actually, you can hear some of the others at...

http://myspace.com/bagoftoysmusic (just masters though)

As far as we could tell they sounded great (and i know that's what matters), but we didn't want some experts to say "That's horrible!" Thanks for reconfirming our thoughts.

Thanks again guys!

Mr Tait ...

"That's horrible!"

You're most certainly welcome!

See where creative word-editing can cause problems?? (anyone remember MAD magazine when they did this for movie reviews? Maybe I'm just old...)

:D

AM vs. FM...

...the unmastered is a song. AM. (God, I'm old)

The mastered is a SONG. It's got what I like, full, rich, easy to pick an instrument and stay with it. FM.

I'm no expert. Sounds like good work to me.

Sounds just like Steve Miller - The Joker.

Great mix, though.
