i generally *DONT* like modelers, but i have never tried one on bass. and really, i am not incredibly impressed with a lot of behri stuff, though i think that their products perhaps get a lot more hatred than they deserve (this is a *general* statement, mind you).

BUT

i need a cheap bass preamp like last week. was really looking for a sans-amp RBI, but it is very nearly 3x the price (does it sound 3x as good?). havent found even a used one for under $250 + shipping---- guess that is a statement to its quality right there.

my requirements are very simple. why cant i find something with simple gain and eq? i dont even need an effects loop. i have a dbx 266XL and a mackie FR-M800 that i plan to use with whatever pre i end up with. hell, "nice" preamps cost as much as "nice" heads, with the amps built in. also, the 2 space behri will force me to get another rack, too, as mine is only 4 spaces. i cannot imagine that the modeled compression is better than even my cheapie 266XL (which is no slouch for a live bass rig).

are rack-type rigs just not cool anymore?

BTW, my first gig with this group is may 10th, so i need to get it together pretty quick.

Tech-21 ANYTHING pretty much rules. If you have the cash, go for it.

That said, I've heard some decent tones from the guitar Behringer stuff, and the big win there is that the LED indicators that show where your knobs would be on the saved patches. I'm surprised no one else went that route...

thanks for the link and the info. gosh, can i really trust this thing? lol. i can just see it crapping in the middle of a set. the band has a good, but not great PA, and being forced to play through it is going to suck.

visa doesnt care---- and the RBI is really what i want. sigh.

I'm with Drew - get a Tech 21 Bass Sans Amp and be done with it. I have both the SansAmp and the Bass VAmp Pro, and while the latter has its uses, the SansAmp will never let you down.

Can't speak towards the unit in question, but I don't think I've seen any reliability issues with their rack mount Vamp line. I use a Tech 21 Tri-A.C. or Digitech GNX3000 for bass both with great success. The Tech 21 stuff is very good across the board but very limited in application (set the knobs and forget about it) while the Digi allows all kind of crazy stuff. I'll have some samples of the Tri-A.C. on both guitar and bass on http://www.frugalguitarist.com in the next couple days.

actually---- i am thinking i will pass. the dollars are right, but the synergy might not be.

"just set it, and forget it!"

that is what i want. that is the kind of player i am. big. fat. warm. those are the kind of adjectives i would use for what i want. maybe a little growl, but never even moderate distortion. i like the way tube amps sound. there is no way my bassman 100 (the old head/cab, not the new combo) is enough without micing. which, everyone will be running through the PA, but monitoring could be problematic. besides, i need to feel that crap to really get into it.

I have the Tech21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI (programmable). I love this thing. If I play through a PA and don't have my amp with me (Gallien Krueger RB1100, it's a beast), then I will take the Tech21 and plug directly into the board. GREAT tone, even through a cheap PA.

have one. editing is a pain compaired to pod. Sounds are generally noisy. fun to play with and could be good with proper editing. Hope that helps. If you have questions post away. Beware the " oh, it ain't tube amp" blasts. Have both. I do.

Here's another vote for the Sansamp. Even just the little small one is awesome.
I don't own one, but did a few FOH dates with a band and never had a bad bass sound or problem the whole time. It's definitely on my list.

Sansamp RBI Q

How do you guys use your sansamp's? like what various settings do you use, what have you tried doing with it? Details please, cause I have not been at all happy with my RBI. I'm having better luck mic'ing my Fender Bassman 200 to get sounds I like.

as much as i would love to trash the B, i remember there being a thread on gearslutz about a year ago about the recording of king's X's latest album, and they were using the v-amp bass on there...michael wagener even went so far to say that the low end on it sounded really good, even though they ended up using other DI's or mic'ed cabs to fill in the mid/high end

Behringer = crappy

Modelers = crappy

Behringer modeler = CRAPTASTIC!!!

`nuff said.

did anyone mention that Behringer V-Tone BDI21 is basically a copy (clone) of Tech 21 Bass DI SansAmp?

yeah, I know, it's not programmable, but it's also not digital and it's also only $30! They sound GOOD going into a PA.

and it's a handy direct box to have around for other possible applications - it certainly costs like a passive DI, while it's an active one.

eh screw it. i just got one of these, lol.

it should arrive today or tomorrow. i think it will be a reasonable match to my 2x15 black widow-loaded cab. down the road, maybe an avatar 4x10 or something. the older i get, the harder it is to lug around refrigerator-sized speaker boxes.
