What do I need?

I am recording now with a dorky computer microphone.
I like to spend a minimal budget on some stuff that will allow me to get better recordings.
The problem is, I am at a loss at what I really need when I see all the stuff you guys have.
Just want something that I can plug a reasonable mic into and my acoustic into .... and connect the whole set up to the line in of my sound card?

Oh, forget to mention that I want to record in wav.. I have cool edit and cakewalk, if it helps to know.
I would like some recommendation of equipment to buy too...
