Woah! It's cool man! I know the limitations of my gear ... I only recently got that M12 and only then because a deal came up off the back of an ebay auction. It'll be fine for drumkit stuff as long as I have at least two quality pres available (and preferably four, as you say) for critical parts.
What you're suggesting is exactly what I'm saying - I don't want to keep dropping my leftover overdraft (!) on something that I can just about afford every time I get a little spare. I have a decent enough platform to start from here, better than most home recordists will ever put together. If I was to get to your standard then I'd be able to charge a good rate because my equipment would be better than most of the commercial studios in my area!
Chess - I kinda agree with you. I'm not going to blow a tonne of money on something out of my league, but I might keep a list of wishes tacked to my pinboard and make sure I check ebay regularly. The discipline is only getting the stuff I should aspire to now, though.
So, both of you guys are suggesting that I don't go and augment my cheap gear with slightly less cheap gear then? I could go out tomorrow and add SPs, ADKs and cheap rack gear with no problem. Are the kinda pieces we discussed here the next sensible step, or should I keep inching? I guess that's the real question here ... what will benefit me the most where time is no object?
