What Do I Need To Record My Band!?!?!?

i want to record my band we play in my drumers bed room and its small, we want to record live(in his bed room) i was thinking of getting a hard disk multitrack recorder one for about 500-1000 dollars thats got a disc drive, i have a few questions

1. do i need anything more than a multitrack recorder like would i need a computer(i no i might need mics for the drums and stuf)?

2. can we play live in his small room with out getting guitar picked up on the drum mics and stuff like that?

3. does guitar have to plug right into the recorder or can u record it from the amp and if so how do u reocrod it strait from the amp? it would have to have an out put.

thats all i can think of right now im sure i will have more later

lol. yeah you might need a few mic's.

maybe. if you close mic everything (which brings us back to your first question - yes you will need several mic's) you can probably do it with manageable bleed-through.

it will be hard to record 'live' if the guitar is plugged direct. solution - mic the amp.

basically, if your band is good and has good control over their own levels and tone, you can just mic the room with a few overhead condenser mics and record it live that way. that would be cheaper and easier than trying to figure out how to mic everything and get all those mics multitracked correctly. if you choose to mic everything individually, you can easily burn several hours just trying to get the drums to sound right with several close-mics. with just micing the room, if it comes out good, you can keep it and run with it, or you can use that 'live' recording as a scratch track and overdub everything else individually.

are condenser mics expensive how many would i need? will i have enough emputs on my track reocder to plug em all in?
and whats bleed through is it like gettin guitar on drum mics like i said?

whoa slow down bro. i dont mean to be harsh, but you need to do a bunch of reading and educate yourself. im pretty new myself, so im not trying to sound uppity, but just understanding the basics will take you a long way. read through this board and everything else you can find and try to get a good understanding on what needs to happen before you press record. youre asking questions that you need to know the answer to way before you consider recording anything. use the 'search' function at the top of the page and youll find tons of info outlining exactly what youre looking for. every situation is different. youll need to decide for yourself what route you need to take.

dude, i can answer your questions, but if you dont already know the answers, it will just leave you with more and more questions. im not trying to be a dick, but if you figure out these very basic concepts on your own, youll be a lot better off in the long-run. if you try to record your band without a clue as to whats going on, its gonna sound like shit, and then youll be unhappy on top of wasted a bunch of time and money.

dude, quit being a baby. youre not stupid. maybe lazy, but i doubt youre stupid. in the time youve taken to make these threads and make these posts, you could have answered all of your own questions by simply searching and reading things in this very forum.

well i have read alot of stuf i dont understand like about mics they r like oh yea my favorite mic is the gfm4009 its great likeits code talk or somethin and i read about drums i think i might get a cheap electric so we can play at my house

got any suggestions? like a tascam or a fostex and how many tracks?
 
i was thinking 16 but we can only play like 4 songs and its only drumer and me on guitar and we have a singer and my sis can play one of the songs on bass

lol, well, theres many options ranging from downright cheap to mega-buck. again, do some reading and figure out which product suits your needs.
