I'm brand new to recording and horribly uneducated. I am looking to do some digital home recording for fun and as such have a pretty small budget in mind. I will be using cakewalk pro audio 9 for recording and mixing on the computer and will shortly be purchasing a few mics, although I haven't decided which ones yet. What else am I going to need to be able to get a halfway decent sound onto CD?

What is your budget?

You said "a few mics"....What kind of instruments are you planning on recording?

I would like to keep my total expenditure to <$1000 as I'm just doing this for fun. I will be micing an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, and vocals. I am considering the Shure SM81, Rode nt3, and Shure SM57.

Real good choice on your mics, solid value for the price. Also look for a good mixer and soundcard that fits your budget. You are set to go. Good Luck.

$1000....

That's good to hear you can go that high.

I'd start here at MAudio..http://www.midiman.com/products/m-audio/delta.php

you have a number of options but with your budget you can stay away from Creative sound cards. I run a Delta 1010 and I like MAudio cards a lot. I also have an Echo Mia (currently on a recording buddies PC) which is a great little 2 in 2 out card, but no MIDI.

You could opt to get a card like the 1010-LT which has preamps built in or you coould get a mixer. Like I said...you have some options. Start doing some research and use the search engine on this site, you will have a lot of reading material. :D

Here's another good source for info although unless your a subscriber you can't access the past 6 issues online. But that's OK because you will find a ton of info by looking at back issues past 6 months ago.

Good luck!

Not a bad idea but it sounds like he already has a computer and Pro Audio 9 so all he needs to get going is a preamp and sound card. Plus the flexibility of a computer based DAW,

This is what I was hoping I could get away with. Now I just need to go read up on preamps and soundcards.

Thanks for the help.
